RP: Making Up for Lost Time

Sam pulled the rest of the leftover barbecue out of the oven and checked that it was hot all the way through before transferring it to a platter and putting it on the table. It didn't occur to her until after it was done that she'd gone through an awful lot of ceremony just to have her best friend over for lunch. Yet one more sign that sharing a house with her mother was not doing her any good. She groaned as she put out the glasses and a pitcher of tea. Might as well finish it off.
She had to get out of this house. She thought she'd done a good job keeping a positive attitude over the last nine months, despite all the challenges she'd faced. Work hard, and you can make anything happen; that had always been sort of an unofficial motto of hers. Worrying and complaining didn't make life better. But god, even she had to lose patience eventually.
Sinking into her usual chair, she poured herself a glass of tea. Screw ceremony.
It didn't help that she and her therapist had had a long talk earlier in the day about her progress--or her lack of continued progress, that was. If you listened to her doctors, her recovery was amazing, speedy and even miraculous. Most days, she agreed with them. But there were enough off days that it wasn't perfect, and the off days weren't lessening.
Which meant she needed to start rethinking the anything part of her motto.
There was a knock at the side door, and she smiled, knowing it had to be Jake. He was the only one who ever used that door, because it was most wheelchair accessible. At least she could always count on lunch with her best friend to keep a smile on her face a little longer.
