Have you ever had a moment where you realize your child's growing up and wonder 'when did that happen?' Shosh was having one of those moments currently. Sitting across the table from her four year old over breakfast, when out of nowhere Sloane peered up from her cereal and asked.
"Why does My Cody think you need to watch your mouth?" Sloane gave her Mama a quizzical look, wondering how someone would go about watching their mouth.
Shosh sighed softly, the realization hitting her that Sloane was growing up, and as much as she didn't want to admit it, and would never admit it to Cody, but he was right. Unless she wanted her daughter cussing the way she did, it was about time she start cleaning up her own language. "Mama says some things that shouldn't be said, Peanut." She explained.
"What kinda things?" The little girl wrinkled her nose, not aware that her Mama said or did anything that was wrong.
How do you go about explaining cuss words to a four year old? Shosh was going to chew Cody out the next time she saw him, he might be right, but this conversation was a strange one to be having with her daughter. "Bad words. What some people call swear words."
"Oh, like the swear jar Nana makes Grandpa put money in?" Shosh paused for a moment at that comment before remembering that her Grandmother did have a swear jar for her Grandfather. But neither one had ever told Shosh not to cuss the way she did, she had a feeling it was because she wasn't with them enough - or they always figured her Dad would have gotten it under control.
Nodding, she smiled faintly. "Yeah, like that." It was going to be hard habit to break, this much Shosh knew. But maybe it was about time she tried to break it. "Peanut, do you think Mama should have a swear jar?" She asked, wondering what her little girl's answer would be.
"Dunno, My Cody thinks you should stop doing it." Sloane replied, weighing her Mama's question. "Yes, Mama, think you should."
Well that was that, and Shosh was choosing to think she was doing this because Sloane asked her to and not because Cody thought she should. Getting up from the table she found a mason jar in the cupboard and took a piece of paper and a pen, scrawling 'Swear Jar' across it before taping it onto the outside of the jar. "Okay, Peanut. Whenever Mama says one of those words, we'll put dollar in this jar." She knew the usual was a quarter or something, but Shosh knew herself, and knew that she needed the amount to be higher, for it to 'hurt' more if she cussed.
"What happens to the money?" Sloane asked, titling her head and studying the jar as Shosh put it on the table.
"It'll be yours Peanut." Shosh replied with a smile, making a mental not to never let Cody know this conversation happened, he had a big enough opinion of himself as it was, Shosh didn't need to deal with any smugness if he ever found out she was taking his advice.
