She'd been on the phone with J.J., laughing at something he had said while she drove to Tribal when it happened.
The headlights came from nowhere, and Erica barely had time to register the fact that the car wasn't stopping before it slammed into hers. She screamed as she slammed into the steering wheel, her phone flying from her hand. Her car spun across the street, practically wrapping itself around a light pole, her seat belt biting into her skin painfully. She felt a white-hot pain that started in her torso and radiated out all over her body.
Her last coherent thought before losing consciousness was that she didn't think her car was going to survive this.
When Erica came to the first time, she had no idea how long she'd been unconscious, but she wished she were again because the pain was too much. She whimpered, wondering how she'd got out of her car and trying to focus on whoever was touching her, but she couldn't open her left eye and it was taking too much effort to try to focus just her right eye. Every breath she took felt like glass shredding her lungs, and she started to panic.
"Can't breathe!" she managed to get out, wanting to bring her hand to her chest, but not able to move, which was only making her panic more.
"Calm down, ma'am. We're about to move you onto the stretcher and get you to the hospital," a male voice broke through her panic.
She whimpered again, not able to find her voice to respond. Though she was able to scream out in pain when they moved her to the stretcher. She'd lost consciousness again before they'd even got her in the ambulance.
Erica kept fading in and out on the ride to JPS Hospital, and she was completely unaware of what was going on around her when they wheeled her into the Emergency Room.
She just wanted the pain to go away. It was all she could think about.
