RP: How do they make coffee this bad?

Peter had often wondered how the canteen managed to make such awful coffee. It varied from barely black to so thick it could stand on its own without the cup, and still, he came for it. Still took his midmorning break for coffee and some kind of sandwich, knowing that by lunctime there'd be patients out of surgery and patients up from overnight in the ER, and that there'd be no such thing as lunch.
He regarded the brew today and put it somewhere in the middle of the 'awful to terrible' scale, taking a sip as he slid into an empty booth. Maybe horrible coffee and eggs on toast would distract him from the ache in his knee. Damn cold and rainy weather; the knee rarely bothered him on any other kind of days.
