Cody was starting to feel like he lived in this damn hospital. He hadn't liked being here when he'd been a patient for a few weeks, and he didn't like it much better now that he was having to come in for PT, even if he got to see his sister during the therapy. The purpose for today's visit wasn't anything to do with him, at least. Dakota had been the one assigned to look after him this weekend, as if he was some wayward child in need of a babysitter instead of a twenty-five year old man who just happened to have some mobility issues at the moment, and she had to be at the hospital because Adam's sister, Sam, had finally woken up from her coma a few days ago ( ... )

Peter looked up, mouthful of egg and toast, and waved a welcoming hand. It took a moment to swallow, but he got to his feet as he did. "Good, good." He reached to shake Cody's hand. "Worked a ton as the token single guy on the shift, so I got home cooking from the girls that got off because of it. Yours okay?"

Peter glanced at the booth, then pointed to the table next to it. "Sit there, and I'll move. Booths are a bitch with crutches." He'd spent long enough on them himself to know. "Bet that knee's giving you hell today with the rain."

"Can you put that down here for me?" Cody asked the lady carrying his tray. He grinned at her when she did. "Thank you, ma'am. I appreciate the help."

After he sat down, he looked at Peter. They'd talked some when he was stuck in the hospital, but it had never gotten too personal. Not with Peter as one of his nurses and all. But he'd liked the guy and the fact he understood about the knee injury and what riding meant to him, so having lunch with him would be nice.

"My holidays were spent being 'looked after' my sisters, by their kids, even by their husbands, and that was just when my mom and dad weren't around to scold me for trying to do anything on my own without the crutches." Cody grimaced. "I'm finally starting a job this week, though. A friend from my riding days has got me on part-time with the cattle auction down in the Stockyards. It's gonna be mighty tough being around all that knowing that I can't ride anymore, but at least I can walk, right? And, yeah, the rain's not making it feel any better. How's yours?"

Peter chuckled. "I can relate to the hovering. It was my mom and my aunt hovering over me. And I was fifteen and invincible! They drove me nuts." He moved his coffee and the rest of his sandwich, sliding into an empty chair.

"Job sounds good though. Keep you doing stuff you enjoy. Kinda had it shoved on me while I was recovering. My dad's a rancher, so there's really nothing to do but be around it all. But everyone told me it was good for me, you know?" He took a sip of coffee, then chuckled softly. "And they were right. I'd just never have admitted it at fifteen." He gestured to Cody's knee. "You're looking pretty sturdy though. Probably last longer than your other knee."
