Date: June 10th, 2011 Characters: Neve Stadheim, Jake Abernathy. Location: A Park In Fort Worth Status: Semi-Private Summary: Sometimes you just need to vent. Completion: Incomplete
Neve had sounded a bit stressed, to someone who knew her, when she'd called and asked him to meet her. She rarely did that, so of course he'd made time in his day to meet up with her. It was a lot easier since school was out for him and he had decided not to sign up for any class at least for the first half of the semester. Perhaps he should have, but this might be the last summer his daughter actually wanted to spend time with him during, so he was going to take advantage of it.
He took his time, enjoying the day despite its warmth, to wheel to the soccer field. He had a lot less trouble than he would have suspected getting there, which was a happy realization.
He smiled as he saw her. "Hey there, Neve," he greeted her.
Pulling her attention away from the soccer practice when she heard Jake’s voice, Neve returned his smile with a forced one of her own. “Hey.” She wasn’t an emotional person, or at least not when it came to a crisis, after all that’s why she was good at her job; she didn’t freak out. But she wanted to freak out right now, to vent and just tell someone what was going on.
“God, Jake, you won’t believe what my In-Laws are trying to do.” Neve skipped the pleasantries of ‘hey, how are you’ and went straight to her point as she climbed up from her spot on the grass to walk towards him. “And I could really use a hug right now.” She felt silly admitting the last part as she reached Jake.
"What are they trying to do?" he asked, already getting a bad feeling in his gut from the way she went straight to the point. Especially when she straight up asked for a hug, which was something very rare for her to do. She must be really upset, he thought as he snaked an arm out around her and pulled her to his lap for a moment for a big, firm hug. It was one thing he could say he was good at. He had strong arms and he'd been told that he was comforting, though he would never say that himself.
The question was so simple, and yet not. Neve knew logically what they were trying to do of course - take her girls from her. But the 'whys' that's what made it confusing, although her mother in law had pegged her job as the reason, Neve didn't believe that was the only reason. She had been an EMT a lot longer than she had been a widow, working this same job for years before Zach passed away. Neve had been running through all the possibilities, but each one seemed as the ridiculous as the last.
"They're trying to take my girls from me." Neve couldn't hide the edge in her voice as she spoke, not surprised when Jake actually listened to her last statement and pulled her into a firm hug. "And their excuse.....I'm an absentee mother. Me? Absent? Yes, three days out of the week I'm working, but the girls can always get a hold of me. Also it's not like I leave them with strangers, and why now?" She mumbled this into his shoulder, relaxing into the hug. She was used to being the person doing the comforting, not the one needing to be
