It might have been a good idea to let Rori know about the visit. Cody hadn’t bothered telling her that he planned to visit iron Hollow Ranch today, though. Mostly because he hadn’t been entirely sure that he’d actually do it. He knew she was wanting him to come work there, doing paperwork or something crazy like that, and he was kinda worried about disappointing her if the owner realized he wouldn’t be much good at office work. Sure, he’d taken care of their budget, expenses, and all the travel arrangements during their years on the road, but he wasn’t that great with computers, hadn’t even discovered Youtube and that silly cat website until he’d been forced to spend weeks in the hospital, and he got restless even more now than he used to because there just wasn’t any kinda outlet anymore.
Cody had never been scared of shit before, though, so it was stupid to let something like an injury prevent him from checking out the ranch. Of course, now that he was here, he felt an ache in the pit of his stomach because it reminded him of his old life. The smell of horses and hay brought to mind the arena, and he found himself missing the feel of a bull beneath him. That risk and danger had been more of a high than anything else he’d ever felt, way more than broncs had been, and it had felt like he could do anything in the world after he rode out his time on a bull without getting bucked off. It was a feeling he couldn’t even describe, and he was worried he’d never find anything that made him feel like that again. Practically invincible in a way.
But he’d missed this, too. The sound and smell of horses, being around cowboys who were real and not just posing to score chicks at bars, and the way this felt like coming home whenever he stopped focusing on his past and what he’d never have and focused more on what he could have now. God, he wanted to ride again. Horses weren’t like bulls, but there was still a thrill there that he missed. He tightened his grip on his cane before he made his way over to a corral and just looked at the horses. He hadn’t seen Rori yet, which was probably for the best because she’d likely smack him for showing up without telling her.
