A funny thing happened on the way to work this morning.

My morning commute started out hot and irritating and altogether unpleasant. For whatever reason there was a train delay and I stood outside for almost 45 minutes in sweltering heat, dripping sweat, just not a pretty picture for when you finally do show up to work.

But then, once I finally got on a train and I was almost at my stop, a funny thing happened. I locked eyes with this (rather cute) Asian guy and we smiled at each other. I thought we were two strangers silently sympathizing over the crushing crowd on the train. Until he waved.

I was stumped. And I smiled to myself. A case of mistaken identity? He leaned forward minutes later and said a name in a querying voice. I asked him to repeat it because the last name sounded kind of like a badly butchered version of mine (and it's not uncommon for people to butcher it), but when he repeated it I still didn't understand what he was saying. The first name sounded kind of like Erica. Obviously, not my name. I shook my head and said, "No," because even though I still hadn't heard the name correctly, I didn't recognize this person at all. So how could I know him? He said, "Sorry," and then I think he was a little embarrassed as he then closed his eyes and tilted his head against the wall of the train. I thought it rather amusing though and had a good chuckle for the rest of my commute.

Of course, I've been pondering this off and on for the rest of the day, as I have a habit of doing, and now I can't help but wonder if it was a guy I once knew in high school. He could've grown up to look like that . . . I found a picture of him on the alumni website but since he's smilely widely there you can't really tell and now the images of both men are blurred in my mind. So oh well. :P
