songs that remind you of BSG

Jul 16, 2008 15:51

Let's have a little hiatus fun, shall we?

I decided to put together some songs that either remind me of BSG itself or the characters and relationship within the show, plus I've provided downloads and lyrics so you can check all the good stuff out. :D

Plus, if you have any songs that you like that relate to the show for you and you'd like to share them, please do!

general BSG songs

Dare You To Move - Switchfoot
lyrics | download

welcome to the fallout
welcome to resistance
the tension is here
the tension is here
between who you are and who you could be
between how it is and who it should be

Though this specific part of the song really highlights New Caprica and later, the conflicts of the Final Five, this song to me, from beginning to end, defines the journey that is Battlestar. I definitely recommend checking out this song if you already haven't, and while you listen, envision the show and I'm almost sure images will come to mind as you're listening.

Stand - Rascal Flatts
lyrics

when push comes to shove
you'll taste what you're made of
you might bend 'till you break
'cause it's all you can take
on your knees you'll look up
decide you've had enough
you get mad, you get strong
wipe your head, shake it off
then you stand

I have no idea what the end of the world would be like, but from the portrayal we've seen on the show, I think the characters have been right where this song is talking about; they've been forced into this drastic situations where they are called far and beyond what they ever expected and even think they're capable of, but it's at that dire time when they find out who they really are (and we do, as the audience). I also love the bridge:

every time you get up
and get back in the race
one more small piece of you
starts to fall into place

So Small - Carrie Underwood
lyrics | download

sometimes that mountain you've been climbing
is just a grain of sand
and what you've been out their looking for forever
is in your hand
when you figure out love is all that matters after all
it sure makes everything else
seem so small

I was originally going to put this under the A/R category, but I think that this song generally fits all the different relationships and friendships within the show. I mean, these people are battling for their lives, having just lost their world, and I think we slowly see them realize that if they rely on each other, everything else is going to seem so minimal. I thought one of the greatest demonstrations of this has been the A/R relationship in season four, but there are plenty of other examples throughout the series (such as Lee and Bill's father/son relationship).

Kara Thrace

Drops of Jupiter - Train
lyrics | download

tell me, did you sail across the sun
did you make it to milky way to see the lights are faded
that heaven is overrated
tell me, did you fall for a shooting star
one without a permanent scar
and did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Actually, there are a lot of pieces of this song that remind me of her. I don't have much more to elaborate on except that whenever I hear this song, I think "OMG KARA!" And it makes me all warm and fuzzy. XD

Gaius Baltar

Judas - Kelly Clarkson
lyrics | download

I didn't know, I didn't know
I couldn't see, I couldn't see
Never thought you'd forget me
Couldn't believe, couldn't believe
How you deceived, you deceived
Never thought you'd do that to me

It's funny because back when I heard this song, I believe the audience was meant to view Gaius as the traitor (or the Judas figure, if you will), because I think this was during the middle of season three. But keeping with that, while the song could portray that time period and view of Baltar, I think it would also work currently but vice versa. It's interesting that Gaius went from being the traitor to being "betrayed" this season (and the end of last season).

Laura Roslin

Maybe - Kelly Clarkson
lyrics | download

I'm strong but I break
I'm stubborn and I make plenty of mistakes
yeah I'm hard and life with me is never easy
to figure out, to love
I'm jaded but oh so lovely
all you have to do is hold me
and you'll know and you'll see just how sweet it can be
if you'll trust me, love me, let me
maybe, maybe

This song I think works for both Laura and Kara, which surprised me upon my initial discovery because I view them as such opposite characters. But if you think about it, examine both characters respectively and then compare them, they really aren't that different. They both are essentially strong women, leaders even, who are obstinate and hard and yet have their breaking points. They also both had a vision for Earth and the will to lead to people to the Promised Land.

I love this song, but especially the line "I'm jaded but oh so lovely". The contrasting lines in this song I absolutely adore because I think the human character is too complex to define as one thing; I think the conflicts of our character are the reasons we are such complex human beings and therefore why such extraordinary TV characters are born. Anyways, great song.

Adama/Roslin

For My Love - Bethany Dillon
lyrics | download

gaze into my eyes
let me know you'd fight
thousands for my love
slip your hand in mine
ask me to dance with you tonight
just ask me for my love

I actually did a picspam to this song at my journal not too long ago. I don't know what it is about the song, and there's no specific line per se that makes me go "OMG A/R!", but I think it's the mood of the song and the overall story of it that really paints a picture of the Adama/Roslin relationship to me. Whether you're an A/R shipper or not, this song is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, and the artist was only 17 when she recorded it!
