Work? Who needs it?

As some of you will know I had some unplanned time off a few weeks ago. This gave me some space to think and what I mostly thought is "why am I spending so much time in a job I really don't like?". Rather fortuitously I also sold my old flat at the same time. So, rather than sticking to the original plan and pouring all of the equity from the old flat into the new mortgage, I've resigned from my job to give myself some space for a while. Fortunately there's no shortage of demand for IT auditors so if and when I get really bored (or really broke) I should be able to go back.

Alternatively I could do something entirely different.

I feel I've been a bit of a hypocrite for the last few years. My core beliefs include that you can only truely succeed when you're doing something that you enjoy, and that if you don't succeed at least you'll be doing something that you like. I've gradually been moving further and further away from what I enjoyed doing (partly because I changed and started to get less pleasure from programming (now there's a title for a book)) and partly because I could see that kind of work increasingly being outsourced and I wanted to protect my income.

So, right now, I have no idea what I'll be doing in six months time.

Watch this space...
