The Wedding of Zell Dincht and Polly O'Keefe

Dec 01, 2011 12:14

Dairine got me to the church on time, hollaring out the window at the coachman while we rattled along the cobblestone streets. I hoped Charlie and Coraline were able to keep up in the coach behind.

But there were no other disruptions. Traffic moved smoothly, and before long, I saw the place where our revised wedding would take place. That's when ( Read more... )

After the service, we headed for the hall where the reception was held. The dinner was informal, with tables set up for people to fill their own plates, but that didn't stop people from banging spoons against their glasses before delivering their speeches.

Lipton stood, drink in hand, half-smile on his face as he gave the room a nod. "I'm not the the most eloquent of guys, so I'm going to keep this short. Besides, you should see from just how happy these two kids are that the whole romance part goes without saying." He paused to grin over to where Zell and Polly were sitting. "Finding the right person is one in a million, and it's some kinda luck that brought mister and missus Dincht together here on this magical island of ours. I wish them all the happiness in this - or any other - world, because nobody deserves it more."

He raised his glass, smiling over at the newlyweds. "To Polly and Zell."

It took a little time to get peoples' attention but when Jack had it he absolutely lit the place up.

"Hello, everyone. You know, it takes a strong and intelligent man to realize his dreams and achieve his goals in life and love. A man that is not afraid to live life to its fullest and embrace what is truly important. But enough about me..." He paused to laugh at his own joke. He thought it was hilarious.

"I'm here to talk about Zell and Polly. Two people who have come together today to form a union that will surely last forever. Polly... you look absolutely beautiful. Zell is lucky to have found such a wonderful woman to share his life with. And Zell, you are so lucky to have Polly by your side. Treat her well, love her as you are loved. I wish you both peace and happiness in your new life together and may your union be blessed."

And with that, Jack raised his glass to them, took a drink, and slipped away, returning all the attention to the happy couple.

Dairine thinks this a kind of rite of passage, or something. First Maid of Honour speech? Somehow she's hit That Age When Your Friends Get Married and hardly even noticed. But today is about Polly--who by what's really a stroke of incredible luck mixed with careless planning just got married in Westminster freaking Abbey like the Queen of England or something--so she's going to talk about Polly.

"The first thing that I thought when Polly said she and Zell were getting married," she says, "is that it's a really brave thing to do. Sometimes, because of how the island works, we can get scared easily, and be afraid of making commitments or getting to close to people who might vanish on us at any moment. I know that seems like a depressing thing to say, but it's true. But some people, like Polly and Zell, are brave enoug and in love enough to want to make that commitment anyway, and make sure the universe knows they're supposed to be together. So all the best to Polly and Zell. Congratulations." The last word is said in the Speech-- ( ... )

Coraline climbed up onto a table with difficulty, pulling layers of dress up as she clamboured up in heels. On the table Coraline towered everyone and she hit her glass repeatedly with a spoon.

"OI!" Coraline yelled, waiting for everyone's attention. Smiling, Coraline looked down at Zell and Polly and hem-hemed before starting her speech. "Polly has been one of my oldest and closest friends on the island. Together we've been through a lot but not as much as trying to squeeze her into layers of Victorian frou this morning. Good luck there Zell, apparently you're going to need a blowtorch to get that off which I'm going to stop thinking about because it's Polly and it's gross."

Coraline made a face before continuing. "Seriously though Polly is one of the closest things I have to a sister and I'm so happy she found someone as nice as Zell to marry. But if you hurt her or make her cry Zell, I'll sew buttons on your eyes. Okay? Okay! TO POLLY AND ZELL!"

I tapped my glass, and the crowd grew silent. I wasn't used to public speaking, so I felt a little nervous and shy, but this was important. And, if I didn't want to be the centre of attention, what was I doing getting married? I cleared my throat ( ... )
