Dairine got me to the church on time, hollaring out the window at the coachman while we rattled along the cobblestone streets. I hoped Charlie and Coraline were able to keep up in the coach behind.
But there were no other disruptions. Traffic moved smoothly, and before long, I saw the place where our revised wedding would take place. That's when it hit me: I was going to get married at Westminster Abbey. I'm afraid I turned even paler than I was. "Holy cow," I breathed.
But it was when we disembarked and we gathered outside the church door -- shivering in the cold in spite of our many layers -- that the butterflies really started. The door opened, and Jack Harkness stepped out. He beamed at me, in a way that made me feel a little giddy. "Hey, gorgeous," he said. "Nice outfit!"
I took a deep breath -- well, as deep as the corset would allow, and smiled back at him. "What, this old thing? It was just something I threw on."
Behind me, Dairine snorted. I clamped a lid on my laughter. If I started now, I wouldn't stop.
Jack laughed. Then he looked at me more seriously. "They're ready. Are you?" He offered his arm.
I reached back and gave Dairine's arm a squeeze. She turned me to face her and gave me a firm hug, good and strengthening. We pulled back, then, and she looked me in the eye. The unspoken words in her gaze were, 'you can do this'. My unspoken words were, 'yeah, I can. I think.'
I turned back to Jack and put my hand in the crook of his arm. "Thanks," I said.
"No," he said. "Thank you."
The doors to the church parted, and we stepped through. Dairine, Charlie and Coraline walked ahead of me. People stood up. Stately music played; I had no idea what it was, but I walked down the aisle with Jack, step by slow step, focusing on my breathing.
I looked ahead. I saw Zell. He smiled, and instantly I smiled back. Yes, I could do this. I could definitely do this.
Before I knew it, Jack stopped, gave me a kiss on the cheek, then gently propelled me the first step to the alter. I took Zell's hand as I arrived. My heart soared.
"Hi," I said, softly, so only he could hear.
"Hi," he said in return.
"You know where we can find any wire cutters?"
He blinked at me, perplexed. "Uh... I think so. The Compound should have them, I think," he said.
"Good," I muttered, facing forward. "Because we're going to need those if we ever hope to get me out of this dress tonight."
Zell laughed.
In front of us, the Doctor cleared his throat. He pushed his specs further up on his nose and opened a leather bound book. "Dearly beloved," he said, his voice ringing out among the assembled. "We are gathered here today..."
I drew myself up and clasped Zell's hand tight.
