"Holy crap," Kate muttered to herself, flipping another page of the book she was holding on her lap in the middle of the rec room. Around her were several other books, open to various drawings of pointe shoes and information on what it took a dancer to finally be able to dance en pointe, which was all a little terrifying for Kate, even with the ( Read more... )

"And I understand, of course, that by 'sparkle' you actually mean 'awesome' and I have to totally agree," Kate said, turning to look at Luke over her shoulder. She still didn't trust herself to actually stand up in the pointe shoes, no matter how pretty they looked. "The awesome is absolutely blinding."

Of all the things the island could give her, pointe shoes were basically the best, with the exception of the rest of her family. She sort of wanted to show Buck and maybe even T that she could do something like this.

"I know. It's like this place thinks it needs to be super funny all the time," Kate answered, even though she kind of liked the tutu. It was a little too pink, really, but it was sort of the same thing she'd seen the dancers wear when she'd made her mother take her to see Swan Lake.

"But check out the sweet shoes it gave me this morning," she added, pointing down at her feet. "If I ever get the nerve to stand up and dance in them, I'm going to regret it and it'll be great."

"I've got a pair of those, they hurt like shit for a while," Rachel quips as she heads into the rec room in search of something to do. She totally knows this girl, Kate, she thinks.

"Yours are new, yeah?"

"Brand new," Kate agreed, looking down at her feet before she blew out a puff of air and looked up at the woman who'd just come in. She was ridiculously hot, in that same way Britta was and Kate felt really stupid and really young sitting on the floor in her tutu and tights.

"You dance en pointe?" she asked. Alice had been trying to teach her, but then she'd disappeared, so those lessons hadn't gone very far.

"Did for a few years when I was a teenager, got back into it last year," she answers, leaning in to look a little more closely. "Still a little out of shape for it. Stripping doesn't quite work the same muscles. I'm Rachel, by the way. I've seen you in the studio."

Kate nodded, because she'd remembered seeing Rachel, too. "I'm Kate," she said, then gestured down at her shoes in a vague manner. "I woke up this morning and these were on the end of my bed with my name on them, so I figure that's the island's way of telling me I need to do this. It's just... kinda terrifying when you've never really done it before."

And the shoes really did hurt if she tried to do much in them. She was going to have to train forever to be able to do this.

"...since when have we got a ballet?" Chris asks, changing directions and walking into the rec room, though he'd only meant to walk past it on his way to the kitchen.

It's the tutu that intrigues him, really. He's only ever seen someone wear one because they were pissed or high or both.

"We don't," Kate answered, looking up. She recognized the guy from that party that Effy had invited her to, but she didn't think she'd ever talked to him before. Or, if she had, she sure didn't remember it. Then again, she didn't remember a lot about that party.

"I mean, we have a dance studio, but we don't have like, an official island ballet company," she said, smiling. "Just a girl in a tutu in the rec room."

"Nothin' wrong with that," Chris says with a shrug, and means it. It's a mental rule, it only being okay to wear a tutu while you're dancing in it. Not that he's about to put one on himself, but he doesn't think he should be judged if he decides to.

"You should start a proper one. You've got all the books for it." He's noticed all the ones on the floor, and for a second can't help but feel a bit jealous that she's managed to get it to give her anything but psychology school books.

"Yeah, but I can't actually do any of the dancing yet," she answered with a small smile and a bit of a shrug. "I think that's some kind of rule. In order to start a dance company, you have to actually be able to dance." And she could. She was good at it, too. It was just adding pointe shoes to the equation that made her a little shaky.

"I'm Kate," she offered after a moment. "I think I saw you at that party Effy invited me to."

"They are quite lovely, are they not?"

Miranda lingers a few feet away, hands clasped loosely in front of her as she stares in admiration. Her pose suggests that she is taking in some great work of art, rather than a strangely dressed girl with a beautiful pair of shoes. The whole attire is strange, like sort of fairy gone awry but she is a bit envious of the ease in which the girl sits there. As if there is nothing strange about it at all.

Moving closer, she relaxes slightly. "I should like to wear something half as lovely, even if they were ruined by being worn."

Kate's eyebrows lifted at the way the girl was speaking and she stared at her for a moment, then gave a mental shrug and leaned back against the couch. There were all sorts of people here and she figured it had to be only a matter of time before she met someone who talked like they were in a poem.

"The island gave them to me," she said, looking down at the shoes again. "I always wanted to learn back home, but I never really did it. Now I can, I guess, but... they're kinda scary, you know?"

Miranda nods, considering the shoes further. She's come across them or something similar in a book on one of the classes that she has decided to take. There is something thrilling about ballet, so beautiful in the movements and very much like the spirits she knew that she is excited for it. It shall be difficult, but the newness of it is enough to squash bits of her fears.

"Aye, I can see how that would be. Perhaps you can make use of them, scary or not. It would be a shame to waste them," she notes coming to stand next to the box. "I do like your skirt as well."

"The tutu?" Kate asked, looking up with a grin. "I bet we could get the clothes box to give you one, too. I think it's trying to have fun with me, but whatever. I'm just gonna go with it and see what happens." It was just a tutu, after all, and it was fun.

"I'm Kate, by the way," she added, still looking up. "Are you new? On the island, I mean?"

"Hey, Princess!" Aphrodite greets cheerily as she sits herself down in an open space next to Kate. She's been in a great mood ever since the snow went away, and she's been in a completely awesome mood since she woke up last week to find she'd been gifted with a totally bitchin' windsurf board. "What's all this?"

"Pointe shoes," Kate answered with a grin for Aphrodite. It was still way too cool that she knew an actual real life goddess. "And books on all the stuff I need to learn before I can actually dance en pointe without, like, breaking my ankles and all of my toes or something."

God, that would be just her luck to break all of her toes and never be able to do this again.

"Pointe," Aphrodite echoes, giving said shoes an assessing look. "That's, like, ballet, right? How long have you been dancing for?"

[omg I fail, I'm sorry! :(]

"Um, a couple years," Kate answered, looking at the shoes again. "But never en pointe. I always wanted to do it, but it was expensive and like, super time consuming and with all the shit at home I guess I just never got around to it." But now she had all the time in the world.

[No worries! ♥]
