"Holy crap," Kate muttered to herself, flipping another page of the book she was holding on her lap in the middle of the rec room. Around her were several other books, open to various drawings of pointe shoes and information on what it took a dancer to finally be able to dance en pointe, which was all a little terrifying for Kate, even with the ( Read more... )

"And I understand, of course, that by 'sparkle' you actually mean 'awesome' and I have to totally agree," Kate said, turning to look at Luke over her shoulder. She still didn't trust herself to actually stand up in the pointe shoes, no matter how pretty they looked. "The awesome is absolutely blinding."

Of all the things the island could give her, pointe shoes were basically the best, with the exception of the rest of her family. She sort of wanted to show Buck and maybe even T that she could do something like this.

"I know. It's like this place thinks it needs to be super funny all the time," Kate answered, even though she kind of liked the tutu. It was a little too pink, really, but it was sort of the same thing she'd seen the dancers wear when she'd made her mother take her to see Swan Lake.

"But check out the sweet shoes it gave me this morning," she added, pointing down at her feet. "If I ever get the nerve to stand up and dance in them, I'm going to regret it and it'll be great."

"Yeah," she answered. "I mean, not en pointe. Not yet, anyway. I always meant to learn back home." And now she really had all the time in the world. All she needed was a teacher, someone who already knew how to dance en pointe and could help her learn. If she tried it on her own, she'd probably just end up getting hurt.

"And it's not like I'm a professional or anything," she said. "I just liked it."

Kate's eyebrows lifted and she looked at Luke for a moment. "You know how to dance en pointe?" she asked, just making sure she hadn't heard him wrong or anything. She knew guys danced, there had to be male dancers in order for the whole thing to work, but she hadn't expected Luke to be one of them.

Kate laughed and rolled her eyes, resisting the urge to throw a book at him. "Hey, come on, there are lots of guy dancers. Besides, everyone here is practically a super hero with about a billion talents, so it wouldn't have even been that surprising if you were telling the truth."

"I'm not sure anyone here is really a superhero," Kate answered in an off-handed way. "They're just all... so good at everything, you know? Besides, no one's really who they say they are. Being able to label ourselves would require way too much self-awareness and I've never met anyone capable of that."

Then she grinned and got to her point, "So maybe you can dance and you're just not aware enough to know it."

"Hey, if it's not you, then it's not you," Kate said easily, leafing through one of her books again. "You can sword fight, though, right? I mean, you mentioned a war and you had your sword with you at the beach. That's a pretty kick ass ability."

"There was someone here before," Kate said thoughtfully. "She was going to teach me, but she disappeared. I mean, I figure with a real studio there has to be at least a couple people who can dance en pointe and can help me out." Maybe she's just being too hopeful, but she figures if she hangs around the studio enough, she'll find someone who can give her a hand.
