This time last year, Harry Welsh had been stuck in a muddy hole in Holland, the company recuperating from the unholy snafu that Operation Market Garden had turned out to be, and any party spirit had been conspicuous by its absence. He was determined that tonight was going to make up for that.
His one and only previous attempt at organising anything on the island had not gone well, but he'd been pleasantly surprised by how many people had offered to lend a hand. Coraline had been a real sweetie in helping put up decorations - lights and streamers and over the back, a big Happy Birthday banner. His original plan had been for it to say 'Happy 27th, Harry and Nix', until he'd found out that thanks to being stuck on the island, Nix had somehow ended up older than him. Poor bastard.
Liebgott and Helen had done themselves proud in setting up the food. Harry'd managed to borrow a few records from the Catscratch to put on for a bit of atmosphere. Somebody had even offered him some distinctively dubious balloons left over from another party last night. It wasn't exactly flashy, but it all contributed to the right sort of look, and Harry was proud of it, overall. Nix might not be so impressed, but heck, if he'd wanted something fancier he should've said so.
He took the top off a bottle of beer and raised to his lips what promised to be the first of many, many drinks. This was gonna be one helluva night.
