just before the dawn

The last days had been darker than the Doctor ever wanted for the island, the worst since Halloween. After a few months, you tended to forget, and then...and then all hell would break loose ( Read more... )

He had nothing to do the following day so Jack decided that after dinner he'd go to the TARDIS and see if he could get the holoprojector online. He'd gotten it on and flickering for about five minutes, but like everything else he'd tried to accomplish, it had fizzled away.

The door wasn't locked when he got there and he didn't bother to try to get his key...he just pushed the door open, stepped in and then simply stod there. It was almost like he was seeing her again for the first time. Like if he didn't close the door, the bomb in the bay would make a hell of a mess.

But there was no bomb, no Chula ship, and more of the TARDIS than he'd ever truly expected to see. He took a step, then another, and somehow that translated to him running up the ramp to the console and the Doctor, grinning like a kid at Christmas.

"You did it!"

"Not quite," the Doctor said, turning and giving Jack a mad, wide grin. "She won't go, not like we expected her to. Almost like the signal's jammed--but look at her, Jack!"

He looked back up at the ceiling, then pulled Jack in by the hand. It was almost like bloody Christmas.

Jack followed along, smiling broadly enough for his face to ache and laughing sporadically. "How did you do it? Or did I do it? Or did she just decide...can she just decide...holy shit, Doctor! She's so beautiful," he said, too many thoughts racing as he looked around at the ship he knew, the one he'd been trying to get back.

"Yeah," the Doctor said softly, his own grin spreading across his face. "I have no idea what happened, if you did it or I did it or the island..." (Not the Master, definitely not.)

"She's back," he said, and put his free hand up against the wall of the console room, almost dazed, expression something close to blissed out.

During the seven months she'd been here, Jo had got used to seeing the TARDIS on the island, knowing it belonged to the Doctor that was here. Since Ace had shown her there was nothing inside worth seeing, she didn't bother taking much notice of it. Usually.

But today, as she walked past, the door was open and there was light and music from the inside. Which could only mean one thing: the Doctor had finally come to take her home.

With a big smile on her face, she raced towards the TARDIS. "Doctor! I knew..." She trailed off when she saw the inside. This wasn't what the TARDIS she knew looked like, not unless the Doctor had done a lot of redecorating, which she thought unlikely. She sighed, realising it was too much of a coincidence that the Doctor had landed exactly where the other TARDIS was.

But, at least this TARDIS looked like it had all its rooms again. She brightened up at the thought of being able to get into the wardrobe room again.

OOC: For Chase and anyone else that would like to go exploring with Jo. She won't be ( ... )

Chase had heard footsteps in the area, not knowing exactly what was going on -- just that the door was open. He blinked warily and warred with his choice to either go back to his clinic shift or to pop his head in, just briefly. Curiosity won out and he wound up finding a woman standing inside, looking damn pleased. "Hi," he said blankly. "Uh...sorry, didn't mean to interrupt."

Jo turned round at hearing a voice. Her smile didn't change at all upon seeing him. "No, no," she said, went over to him and grabbed at his sleeve. "Come in. I'm just going to find the wardrobe room." She knew where it was, but given that even the console room looked different in the TARDIS now, she wasn't sure if that meant it had moved.

Chase blinked as he was grabbed and suddenly inside the TARDIS, trying to figure out if he'd maybe stroked or something? "Sorry," he offered blankly. "I don't know if I'm who you think I am," he very, very slowly said. Because normally people didn't just grab him and whisk him off for madness.

...well, unless you were House.

Will could hear the music from far away, so he and Kirjava decided to investigate. When he realised the music was coming from the TARDIS, he was a little suspicious. Anytime he'd been near it, it had been closed up, quiet, just a big blue box.

Then he heard the Doctor laughing, and stuck his head inside to investigate. "Holy crap," he said under his breath, staring, because it was much, much bigger on the inside. Kirjava stood in the doorway with her whiskers twitching, sniffing, just as astounded as Will.

"Hullo, Will!" the Doctor chirped cheerfully, snapping his fingers along with the music. "Hullo, Kirjava! C'mon in." He beckoned them inside, still grinning widely and spinning a little as he did, clearly thrilled.

"I didn't know it could do this!" Will said as he stepped cautiously inside, both amused by how giddy the Doctor was and amazed at what he was seeing. "When did it do this? I thought it wasn't working?"

"I just came, and it was...and it was like this!" The Doctor nearly bounced up and down. "She won't travel, but look! Look at all of this. It's here, she's alive."

Zack couldn't resist a good beat. He wasn't opposed to dancing either. He'd done sillier things in his life in SOLDIER, like fighting monsters on the beach of Costa del Sol with an umbrella.

And some summons required ... a little more finesse than just making a few shapes in the air.

He'd been this particular part of the island a few times, but he didn't remember that door being open. Nor such catchy music playing. He walked toward the door, not boogie-ing or dancing or even swaying to the music in the least. Or maybe just a little bit. But only a little bit.

"Huh? It's bigger than I thought," he said to no one in particular. He pulled his head out of the doorway and back out to look at the ordinary looking exterior. He wondered what sort of island trickery lay in wait inside.

He shrugged and decided to go inside anyway. What didn't kill you made you stronger, right? And he's already been dead. Even if it had only been a moment. Dead was dead.

The Doctor was in the corridor just past the bay door, when the silent alarm signaled an unauthorized person. He glanced up, the light of the TARDIS having just barely changed, and peered into the console room. "Hullo?"

"Oh heya," Zack said, waving. "Uh, everything ok in here? I mean the music is catchy, but it could always be an island trap. Seeing as this place is usually pretty quiet."

It was possible that the Doctor would have been an island, but he'd seen the man randomly on the island. Patrolling as much as Zack did meant it was inevitable to run into a lot of people, sometimes literally.

"What?" the Doctor asked, looking at the young man like he had an arm growing out of his head. "It's not an island trap. This is the TARDIS. If it were an island trap, believe me something would have done something bad by now, I've had enough shite this week."

I'm out for a walk 'cos I can be, now that the lockdown's lifted, when I hear music coming from out in the clearing. It's nice, you know, and I'm nodding and smiling and feet have me heading that way.

Before I know it, I'm standing outside something I never thought I'd see except on my plasma screen. My mind flashes on my conversation with Mars the first day, and I just gotta laugh at how it turns out.

"Damn," I say under my breath, wondering if the Doctor's hanging around too. I know I gotta watch my tongue if he is, but I don't see him and I can't resist saying real soft, "She really is bigger on the inside."

Of course the Doctor was around. It was the bleeding TARDIS.

"No, it's just pretend," he drawled, stepping out from behind the console, lifting an eyebrow at the bloke, who looked vaguely familiar. Maybe from telly.

Whoa. I oughtta have seen that coming. It's not like I haven't watched his series. I know the Doctor's always showing up out of nowhere. Might even be a perception filter he's carrying, and yeah, I know I'm a geek, but I'm about to talk to the tenth Doctor.

I pull it down a notch, but my cheek's still quirking. "Warrick Brown," I say and offer my hand, 'cos I need to steer it away from him being fictional. At least until he offers it up. "Hooo-eee," I whistle, staring at the TARDIS. "Cirque, eat your heart out."

Well, seriously, if the TARDIS was open, the Doctor would be there. Or Jack, or Martha and the...right, not thinking about it right then.

"Pardon?" he said, and shook the man's hand briefly. "The Doctor, nice to meet you. Bigger on the inside, all that, though more than it's been now." He grinned.
