just before the dawn

The last days had been darker than the Doctor ever wanted for the island, the worst since Halloween. After a few months, you tended to forget, and then...and then all hell would break loose ( Read more... )

I'm out for a walk 'cos I can be, now that the lockdown's lifted, when I hear music coming from out in the clearing. It's nice, you know, and I'm nodding and smiling and feet have me heading that way.

Before I know it, I'm standing outside something I never thought I'd see except on my plasma screen. My mind flashes on my conversation with Mars the first day, and I just gotta laugh at how it turns out.

"Damn," I say under my breath, wondering if the Doctor's hanging around too. I know I gotta watch my tongue if he is, but I don't see him and I can't resist saying real soft, "She really is bigger on the inside."

Of course the Doctor was around. It was the bleeding TARDIS.

"No, it's just pretend," he drawled, stepping out from behind the console, lifting an eyebrow at the bloke, who looked vaguely familiar. Maybe from telly.

Whoa. I oughtta have seen that coming. It's not like I haven't watched his series. I know the Doctor's always showing up out of nowhere. Might even be a perception filter he's carrying, and yeah, I know I'm a geek, but I'm about to talk to the tenth Doctor.

I pull it down a notch, but my cheek's still quirking. "Warrick Brown," I say and offer my hand, 'cos I need to steer it away from him being fictional. At least until he offers it up. "Hooo-eee," I whistle, staring at the TARDIS. "Cirque, eat your heart out."

Well, seriously, if the TARDIS was open, the Doctor would be there. Or Jack, or Martha and the...right, not thinking about it right then.

"Pardon?" he said, and shook the man's hand briefly. "The Doctor, nice to meet you. Bigger on the inside, all that, though more than it's been now." He grinned.

"Cirque du Soleil," I say, like that explains everything. Which it would, if you were from Vegas. I tug on the back of my neck, wondering if he's ever even heard of Vegas, then figure I gotta go for it. "Circus performers. Known for elaborate stage sets and can't believe your eyes feats. I was just thinking Cirque's got nothing on that."

"Right, the ones with the masks and the acrobatics and the," the Doctor made sort of a nondescript whirling gesture with one hand. "Saw them once. In Montreal. It was cold, but that's all right. As for this, she's no stage set or acrobatic act--though I daresay maintenance is a trial..."

I nod, more at the whirling gesture he makes with his hand than the masks and acrobatics. It's weird, but that's what tells me it's really Cirque that he means. "Yeah. She's the TA--" Shit. "Top of the line. Mind if I take a look?" I add the last real fast, trying to cover for the slip.

The Doctor's eyebrows seemed to go even higher up. "Uh, yeah," he said, brow suddenly furrowing. Something was behind this Brown's curiosity. "Just don't touch anything."

Damn, I'm going inside the TARDIS. How many geeks would kill to be where I am? "Yeah. Yeah, of course not," I say, not exactly wanting to go on another Alice-in-Wonderland adventure just yet.

I strive for cool, nonchalant, as I step inside, and she's every bit as gorgeous as I imagined. "Damn, pretty lady. You're a science geek's dream come true."

"Scientist, then," the Doctor noted. "Or just a geek?"

He wondered how exactly Brown had known about the TARDIS being a lady, but he didn't comment. Or knew her name.

"Scientist," I say, gaze sweeping over the circuits and wires and connections, and turning three-sixty.

When I catch sight of the Doctor again, I tug on the back of my neck, smiling apologetically for being so taken. "Forensics, actually. Audio-visual reconstruction, but I do a little of everything."

The Doctor looked slightly less impressed, and began to realise where he might have seen this bloke before. "Were you working on the case, then?"

"Yeah." He's gotta know I can't give out any details on the case that aren't already public, right? The Doctor being the Doctor, though. I sigh mentally and hope he doesn't ask. Last thing I want is to piss off no shit Doctor Who, but I been doing this job long enough I know what happens when there are leaks. I mean, even if we know whodunnit, there's a lot we don't know.

So I roll my shoulders forward, shrugging into some other information, hoping it'll be what he's looking for. "Wandered out of Vegas straight into a case in progress. Gotta tell you, it was weird, you know, going from working with my team in the best crime lab in the country to working with most of the same team with 80s tech on LOST island."
