just before the dawn

The last days had been darker than the Doctor ever wanted for the island, the worst since Halloween. After a few months, you tended to forget, and then...and then all hell would break loose.

The Doctor had begun to realise that his hands were tied. Maybe it was the conversation with Lee, maybe the frustration that was the man Moss, but he now knew there was little he could have done, and all he could do now was pick up the pieces and rebuild. This was what it was like to have a home, and he had begun to learn a lesson that tasted bitter in his throat. It was always easiest to leave before the dust cleared.

He hadn't spent much time at home. Too much of it had been PR and paperwork and making arrangements to fix the Boarding House and checking the medical care. And the rest of it he had sat alone, looking out over the island from his terrace, until that night, when his gaze fell down over the land and he thought of the TARDIS. If there was anyone in there, they could bloody well leave.

Heading down the stairs, he cut through the brush to the clearing. He fumbled with the key, nearly dropping it in the dark, before he realised that the door was unlocked. Figuring Jack had left it open, that someone would need to get a piece of his mind, he frowned and pushed it open. Which was about the time that the light spilled out through the doorframe, a startling strong light that he hadn't seen in over two years, an eerie combination of gold and teal that lit up his face.

"What?" he whispered, and walked through the door, leaving it open as he crossed through the console room, fingers running over the screens, which had burst to light. After trying unsuccessfully to get the TARDIS to start (because he knew better to do it more than twice), he turned, looking up at the ceiling, and laughed in sheer amazement.

The sound echoed too far, and startled him, before he turned and bolted up the ramp to the bay, the door there standing wide open as well. And it revealed nothing less than open corridors, wide and twisting and turning, unbelievably.

Which was about the time he started to laugh again, and powered up the computers again, turning on music and leaving the doors open, happier than he could have possibly imagined when that day began.
