“I really love you, Heechul.” Siwon told Heechul one day. “Will you be with me forever?”
Heechul didn’t know what to say.
Siwon and Hankyung lived in the same town, on the same street. Their parents knew each other, but they never spoke. It was only until a new boy (whom everybody thought was a girl), named Kim Heechul, moved into the house in between, and boldly dragged both of them out to play, did they talk for the first time. Even as a kid, what Heechul wanted, Heechul got. Heechul wanted three of them to be best friends and that was exactly what they became. Best friends. They have been best friends ever since.
When they were seven, Heechul had called Hankyung and Siwon to the park. Heechul started waving and jumping under a tree by the swings when he saw the boys approaching.
“What is it, Heechul?” Hankyung asked. Heechul squealed a little (no, scratch that, he squealed a lot) and pointed at a tree. There, on one of the branches, was a little black cat.
“A cat?” Siwon looked confused; why is the cat on top of a tree? was what he wanted to ask.
“I think it’s lost. Get it down, Siwon.”
Siwon agreed (although there wasn’t any question in the first place) and Heechul begun to jump up and down. Hankyung just turned around and covered his eyes.
When Siwon got hold of the cat, the branch he was sitting on cracked and down came Siwon. He had managed to cushion the fall of the cat, but hard ground did not help at all.
“Siwon!” Heechul cried out and ran over. Siwon smiled.
“Siwon,” Heechul said, grabbing the cat from Siwon, “the cat. It’s beautiful.” Siwon frowned.
Luckily, Hankyung had turned around at the sound of Siwon’s fall and was there to help Siwon back to their front yard. Hankyung was also the one who nursed Siwon’s wounds and explained to Siwon’s mother about what had happened. All the while, Heechul was playing with his cat.
That night, Hankyung heard a knock on his door. When he opened it, he found Heechul, holding on to Blackie (which was what Heechul had decided to call the cat; I’m the most brilliant person on Earth, someone should really give me a prize for that he announced).
“My mum doesn’t allow me to keep Blackie.” Heechul said, and stuck his tongue out towards the direction of his house.
“And so?” Put it back on the tree then, Hankyung thought innocently.
“I want you to keep it. And you can’t say no because I said so and you listen to me, Hankyung.” Heechul said, holding Blackie out towards Hankyung. Hankyung stepped back.
“Why should I listen to you?”
“Why, Hankyung, you don’t love me? YOU DON’T LOVE ME, HANKYUNG, YOU DON’T LOVE ME!” Heechul pretended to cry and Hankyung knew that it wasn’t real, but he couldn’t stop himself from believing that it’s real, because Heechul was so damn good at stage-crying.
“But I -” Hankyung wanted to retort but couldn’t think of anything to say. “Have you asked Siwon?”
Heechul looked up immediately (his eyes weren’t wet, Hankyung checked) and gave Hankyung an are you stupid? look. “Yes, but Siwon’s mum said no too.”
Hankyung let out an exasperated sigh. (How could I say no to a girl? he thought.) “Okay,” and Heechul dumped Blackie in his arms and skipped happily back to his house.
Hankyung had always hated cats, but for Heechul, he promised, “I’ll take care of it. For you.”
When they moved away for high school, Siwon had asked Heechul if he wanted to date him. Heechul didn’t reply immediately; instead, he ran over to Hankyung’s dorm that and told him everything.
“You should,” Hankyung said casually, still looking at his book. He had been trying to solve a Math sum when Heechul barged him.
“Should what?” Heechul knew what Hankyung meant; he just wasn’t sure if it would be right.
Hankyung closed his book, not that he could concentrate on Math with Heechul in the room anyway (he learnt that from years of experience), and walked beside Heechul. He sat on his bed and placed his arm over Heechul’s shoulder in a very practiced way. “Say yes to Siwon.”
Heechul looked at him, “really?” He asked in a serious tone and Heechul has never been serious in his life.
“If you really love Siwon then yes, you should.”
The next day, Heechul rung Siwon up and said yes.
Heechul has finally made a decision.
“Siwon,” he said, “I don’t want you. I want us.”
Siwon smiled.
(“What do you want for Christmas. Heechul?” Siwon asked him three weeks before Christmas, when they were ten. Heechul shrugged.
“Heechul, tell me what you want and I will get it for you.”
“Really?” Heechul asked and Siwon nodded.
Heechul paused to think for a while, “I think I want you, but I’m not sure.”
“Not sure?”
“Because I told Hankyung the same thing too.”)
