Curious Chemistry: Soap

Feb 28, 2007 22:51

I've been using Irish Spring as my main bath soap for many years. I like the amount of lather and I like the scent. Some time ago, I bought some Irish Spring with Aloe. I made the spectacular mistake of taking a bar of it to Missouri last year, where the soft water and the aloe combined to make me feel slimy upon emerging from the shower every day. More recently, I've started using the aloe version to try to restore some moisture to my wintry skin. I've noticed something strange, though. I still have both the aloe and the regular. If I use both during the same shower, there's some sort of reaction that produces a smell like incense. I don't know enough about incense to identify the particular scent, but that's definitely what I'm detecting. Neither soap on its own smells like incense to me.

Mixing shower soaps
produces unexpected
incense-like odor.

Does aloe-laced soap
really help restore moisture?
Measurement is hard.
