For Squirrels

One of the happy, coincidental benefits of "hypermiling" (see here) is that you drive pretty slowly through residential neighborhoods. It's by design; you don't take off fast, and as soon as you see a stop sign (or a traffic light turning red), you put it in neutral and coast. In my part of town, there are lots of trees, parks, bushes and little critters that come along with them. To wit: our neighborhood has got to be the grey squirrel capital of the world (or at least the metro Detroit area?). Amy and I have sort of adopted all of them. We put out a feeder for them with various nuts and such, and watch them as they play in the back yard. They really are quite endearing.

I get really irritated when I see them dead on one of our streets. There's no real reason for it. Residential subdivisions are 25mph. Plenty of time to slow down at that speed.  I go slow to conserve gas, and to look out for the squirrels.

I'd hate to have to live with the fact that I ran one over because I was being some douchebag that's in too big a hurry to brake to save a life. Small animals' lives are short enough, aren't they?
