NEW Version of OLD Ghost in the Shell movie coming.

I'm torn.

I have fond memories of going to see the original version of this film at the Star John R theatre way back in 1995 when it had its limited run. It was the first anime I'd ever seen in the theatres (alas, I was too young and unaware when the seminal--and vastly overrated--Akira had its epoch-making run) and man, did it look great. These days, with fully digital animation, details beyond even those of Ghost 1.0 are not only possible, but are quickly becoming commonplace. Oshii once called this film the hardest one he'd ever made, just a horrible experience. He went back to the well to make Innocence, its controversial sequel, in 2004. Seems the work he did on Innocence compelled him to retool his first film, complete with a new mix by Skywalker Sound, who handled Innocence and his new film The Sky Crawlers (which I very much want to see).

In short: Ghost in the Shell 2.0 with CGI enhancements and an upgraded sound mix.

You be the judge. "After" pictures with the "befores" underneath:

My take: I slightly prefer the before pictures, for the most part. The old man Aramaki in the room is the only real improvement of the three, to these eyes.

What this will mean for me in the long run, I hope, is that I'll have the option to watch both versions, as I'd love to get this new version in High-Definition. Also, my hope is that this gets a brand new dub, like Innocence is getting, with the cast of the Stand-Alone Complex GitS TV show. THAT would be perfect. The old 1995 dub is pretty sloppy overall (and Mimi Woods is awful as Kusanagi. SAC's Mary McGlynn gets her just right).

Here's hoping.
