Christos Gage's interview on Angel & Faith Issue 20 and why it doesn't fly for this Spike fan

Apr 13, 2013 23:15

Anyone following along knows I’m very against what the Buffy comics has turned into. A couple of weeks ago I was in a good place. I saw what they were doing with the Buffy character and knew I was done. I did my best to ignore the comics. However there still lingered a curiosity about what they planned for Spike. I still do have curiosity regarding ( Read more... )

And now I'm caught up with the comics :). This was a good read, and I agree with your criticism that Gage is overidentifying w Spike rather than treating him as a fictional character.

Thank you! :)

That is what bothered me the most about his writing of Spike and when I realized it the other day I had to write it out.

Other writers (of season 9) did a decent job with Spike's character, so whenever something like this crops up it just really upsets me.

Honestly, I think a lot of Gage's points here make sense. I just wish that he'd worked them into the actual comic a little better. But then, I see Spike differently than a lot of people in Spuffy fandom so YMMV. I never thought he was out of character in AtS, either. My main complaint about the comic was the way Angel and Faith are going "Ew, gross!" about Spike and Harmony having a consensual hookup. Because that's SO much sleazier than manipulating your girlfriend and killing her friends for a year in preparation for giving her a cosmic roofie. :eyeroll:

I understand that some people would not have issues with Gage's Spike. I've heard a few people say they were okay with it. I guess it boils down to how you view Spike (as you say, YMMV). You know I'm not a soulless redemptionist and I personally see a ton of differences between soulless and soulful. Those differences make the character for me, it's where I find enjoyment in the character ( ... )

Most of what Gage says kinda maybe works for me, until we bring Harmony into it. For all the reasons you listed, Spike hooking up with Harmony bothers me. It did on Angel too - soulless Harmony is trying to be good, will do whatever Spike wants because she loves him (as much as Harmony is capable of love), and Spike uses that. It's echoes of the S6 Spike/Buffy dynamic, and I have a hard time with Spike making that choice after living through it, but I tell myself he was so overcome by sensation he didn't think it through. (Sigh ( ... )

Yeah, the interview will work for some people. I still think Spike comes off extremely regressed even with the interview, and what works for others doesn't work for me. As I mentioned to RahiRah, I think it depends on how you view Spike.

(Sigh)Yeah, that was how I took the scene too. After that Spike didn't even try anything with Harmony. Someone people will really disagree with me and think I'm too uptight about sex, but I don't think it does anyone any good to sleep with someone you have no respect or like for (how is that supposed to build Spike up?). And I don't believe for one moment Spike is "friends" with Harmony. From the way he treats and sees her, he seems ( ... )

I think that's the crux of the problem: these comic writers like regressing Spike(whether they see it as regression or not) "just because". They don't provide a good (or any) reason for it, they just do it because they find it amusing. It shows disrespect for Spike's character and disregard for the development he had before ( ... )
