In observing my cat and others', I've noticed that while human eyes look at rest when closed, cats always seem to be holding their eyes shut rather than relaxing them shut.
Furthermore, my cat will often bury his face against my hand, my side, the crook of my elbow or armpit, when there is light nearby. As if he's hiding from it.
