Five Finger Death Punch @ Rams Head Live 11/21/2011

Nov 26, 2011 13:52

Went with Milla, John, and Kate to see Five Finger Death Punch at Ram's Head Live on 11/21/2011. Hatebreed and All that Remains opened for them, along with some band called Rains.

We got there in time to hear some of Rains. I didn't hear anything distinctive and was sure we didn't miss anything as we use the lavatories and checked the merch booths. John and Kate had a friend there (Shabba) and we all had dranks. Hatebreed came on shortly after, and we pushed our way to the floor. Crowd went crazy and a lot of pits broke out. Hatebreed IMO is a great opener, and they seemed better than last time I saw them. I think I hurt my neck on "Destroy Everything."

At some point, "Juke Box Hero" came on the PA. We were all pretty tired after Hatebreed, and with 2 more bands... I was fearing survival. All That Remains came on next, and they had a mini-Angela on bass and harsh vox, and some guy who looked like Jim Henson on guitar. They sounded good, but there seemed to be way less energy and way more pacing or talking between songs (which slowed down the show IMO). Hatebreed just pretty much rolled out and played. During the last few songs, there was a lot of pushing and a large pit (but not very active). I had arms and elbows in my back for all the last 3 songs and could not really move on my own (was rocking back and forth, getting pushed around. Milla got her hair stuck and was very furious at one point. Think I hurt my neck during "2 Weeks" and then the solo Mr Henson was shredding on.

After that, we hobbled to get some water and take a breath. Milla and I decided to check out the balcony for FFDP, and we stayed up there for a few songs. We migrated downstairs after that, but stayed in the back. FFDP came out to a large audience reaction. The singer seemed to talk a bit too much too, like he was giving a wrestling promo at times. There was a titantron behind them with various videos and images (of the 'most interesting knucklehead in the world,' soldiers, what looked like Halo footage, UFC, and faux and real advertisements). They sounded great, but something was off. It was probably because we were so tired from Hatebreed and getting pummeled during ATR. I think I hurt my neck during their BAD, BAD COMPANY cover. They sounded tight and had a good setlist. Could have done w/out the drum solo, as usual. Milla alleges it was better than most drum solos, but I did not believe her. Jason Hook and Zoltan Bathory were shredding quite nicely. I don't think most people know Jason was in Mandy Moore's band in the past.

Either ATR or FFDP had a great song come on before they came one- Van Halen's "Poundcake." I am pretty sure only a few people knew that song there. The crowd was a younger, whiter, more 'bro' crowd for the most part. The most obscure shirt would have been like a Maiden shirt. Most people had FFDP, ATR, or newer band, or ugh affliction style shirts. That's the crowd that Hatebreed and FFDP draw, and I already knew that going in...just observing

FFDP's lights were ridiculously blinding and seizure inducing. Their drum kit was on some kind of riser, because at the drum solo (zzz) I took a piss. i came back and noticed the drummer was like 15 feet higher than he was before. Wild.
