Nick Marcotte: I expect some commentary from you on this one as it involves a movie of choice.
I saw Jerry McGuire tonight. Funny, I haven't seen that one in a LONG time. I remember why it's so touching. There are a lot of lovable things about this movie. Tom Cruise's heart towards his work, Cuba's heart for his life, and how hot Rene Zelwigger was when she actually had meat on her. This film, and many like it, often leave me thinking about my own life.
What's there to think about? I have no job. I certainly have no girlfriend. I guess it's the romantics of it all. "We live in a cynical world," says Cruise. It's true. I've found more evidence of that everyday. How a 50 something year old father, who loves his kids, want's nothing but to have a woman in his life to hold and care for, can't seem to get a break. I am referring to the split up of one Mike Marcotte from his recent love, Denise. The fact that they are all so calm with it is beyond me. Unfortunately, I can pigeonhole experience and not lie.
I guess what's so great about this movie is the fact that lines like "it's a cynical world out there, and I work with tough compeditors" (I applogise for misquotation), is followed up with "you complete me"; the line of the movie. After being in the dating game for so long, I now know what he means. He may not have been talking about the lifestyle of a sports agent, but the lifestyle of a dating bachelor. There's some competition out there, and it's fierce, and the tricky part is the rules and the standards are in a constant state of flux from one person to the next. Jerry realized that his "star" player in his personal life was someone that needed attention/heart --or qwan, as Cuba puts it--or he'd be out of business; an agent by definition is nobody without the player, just like a husband by definition is no one without his wife. "You complete me" is the thesis statement of this film.
So where does that leave me? I guess I'm riding solo right now. Loosing out to all the "Bob Sugars" of the dating scene. They may have money, a washboard stomach, and a smooth line, but do they have Qwan? I think that's a quality not seen, but experienced. Here's to those men with plenty of qwan and no outlet--yet.
Cheers.
