Part 1 is here

The knock at Sun’s door later that night wasn’t the one she was expecting.

“Hello, Sun.” Juliet said as Sun answered the door. “I just wanted to see how you were doing. I’m sorry I didn’t get to speak to you at processing, but…we’re not supposed to know each other.”

“Come in.” Sun smiled. “Have a seat.”

“I think Jack and James are probably getting into it back there.” Juliet rolled her eyes as she settled into an armchair. “Jack came over a few minutes ago to talk to James, and I thought I’d better leave them to it.”

“You and Sawyer?” Sun asked, surprised. “The two of you are living together now?”

“For the last three years.” Juliet nodded. “Listen, giving those two some space wasn’t the only reason I came by. I wanted to apologise for everything that happened back there, and for the fact that you and Jin are having to pretend you don’t know each other.”

“Sawyer explained it all on the way over,” Sun replied, “but there was not much time for him to explain before we arrived at processing.” In truth, it was all only just beginning to sink in now; Sawyer had told them all when he collected them that it was 1977, but it was only now fully dawning on her what that meant. Her aim in boarding the plane had been to find Jin, then for them to leave the island and return home to their daughter. But Sun had never anticipated that their reunion would take place in 1977, that thirty years would separate her from Ji Yeon, and that there would be no way of getting back to their own time.

“He said that it would not have to be forever,” Sun continued, “he said that we could appear to form a relationship in time.” She could tell from Juliet’s expression that the scorn she felt for that suggestion was written all over her face. But it was more than just that; and it was clear that Juliet understood when she said “I know why you’re so horrified at the idea of being stuck here. You want to get back to your baby. But we’ve been here for three years. This is our life now.”

“You are not happy that we came back here, are you, Juliet?” Sun asked.

“I’m happy to see you, Sun.” Juliet smiled for the first time since arriving at Sun’s. “But it’s true that it’s changed everything. I don’t know if we can carry on as we were now.”

Sun looked at Juliet and knew what she was thinking. She didn’t think, herself, that Juliet had anything to fear from the return of Kate, after all, she knew that Kate and Jack had been engaged at one point, although she didn’t know much more than that.

“I am happy to see you too, Juliet,” she said instead. “I wanted to thank you for everything you did to help me get off the island.”

“I’m only sorry that Jin didn’t make it off the island with you,” Juliet sighed.

“That was not your fault,” Sun replied. “I know that you did everything you could to help us. You insisted on putting us on the first raft, even though I know how much you wanted to leave yourself.” Sun had thought about Juliet a lot during the time when she was estranged from the other members of the Oceanic Six. She’d blamed them a little in the beginning, even though she later told Kate she didn’t, for the fact that Jin had not been rescued as they had made no attempt to go back for him, while Juliet had sacrificed her place on the raft for them. She’d felt that Juliet was her only real friend from her time on the island. “You were always there to look out for me, from the moment you showed me my baby in the Staff.”

Juliet looked embarrassed. “Actually, I wanted to say I’m sorry you got that assignment as well. I understand you probably don’t want to go back there. It happened because we had a couple of people panicking about the sub journey and dropping out at the last minute. You and Hurley ended up getting their assignments. It was the best James could do at such short notice.”

Sun nodded. “I understand.” She knew it wasn’t Juliet’s fault; she just wasn’t sure she wanted to go back to that place again. It would only serve to remind her that she might never see Ji Yeon again.

Juliet stared at her. “Really?”

“It will be strange,” Sun admitted.

Juliet nodded. “It doesn’t seem like three years since I took you there to work out the date of conception.”

“Maybe because it’s thirty years from now,” Sun pointed out.

Juliet smiled weakly. “I still can’t believe it, a baby conceived on the island has actually been born in - well, I don’t know how long. It hasn’t actually happened here yet. So, what did you have in the end? A girl or a boy?”

“A girl.” Sun swallowed hard. “Her name is Ji Yeon, the name Jin chose.”

“And it went well?” Juliet asked.

“It was a difficult birth,” Sun replied. “They told me I kept calling out for Jin. I brought pictures with me, but they are on the plane, in 2007. I have nothing left of her now.”

Juliet didn’t seem to know what to say to that. Sun suspected she was thinking of her sister, Rachel, who she had not seen for six years, and her nephew, Julian, who she had never seen at all.

“I am sorry,” she hurriedly said. “I did not mean to remind you of Rachel and Julian.”

“It’s okay,” Juliet smiled tiredly. “I should go anyway. Jack and James are probably done by now. Besides, I’ve taken up enough of your time. I know there’s someone else wanting to spend some time with you,” she said, gesturing towards the window, then opening the door to reveal Jin, who ran towards Sun, throwing his arms around her.

Sun wasn’t even aware of Juliet’s departure as she and Jin embraced, told each other that neither of them had given up on the other, finally able to be together properly without their friends or the other DHARMA people, able to be a couple at last without having to lie.

There was still so much for them to say to each other, to share all the details of their three years apart, so much Sun had to tell Jin about their daughter. But for now, as they vowed never to be apart again, none of the last few days mattered. Sun was able to forget what awaited her the following day. All that mattered in that moment was that they were together again.
