“How long will you love me?”
“I’ll love you till the end of the world.”
“Citizens of the World, this is not a scam. This is an emergency. Scientists have detected a large meteor with a diameter of 150 kilometers traveling towards Earth at top speed. It is estimated that the meteor will hit Earth at 23:59 in three days time. All emergency shelters, bomb shelters and underground shelters will be opened at 08:00 GMT on 2nd April 2020…”
The monotonous voice of the computerized announcement faded into the background as Sungmin grasped the core of the message: The world was coming to an end.
Almost like a reflex reaction, he sifted through the murky haze of his memories as he recalled a movie he watched years ago. The movie was about the end of the world, and he remembered laughing and telling Kyuhyun that it’s just a movie, it would never happen.
But it was already happening.
Kyuhyun. He needed Kyuhyun. He was lost and confused and he just needed Kyuhyun to tell him that this was just a prank, so he could laugh it off and move on with life.
He reached for the phone by the sofa, only to realize that his hands were shaking after several unsuccessful attempts to pick up the phone.
The sound of a key unlocking the door never sounded more welcoming than that moment when Sungmin was hanging onto the last threads of his sanity, desperate for Kyuhyun to be home.
“Kyuhyun!”
Sungmin flung himself at the taller man and clung onto him tightly. Kyuhyun immediately wrapped his arms around him and he could feel Sungmin trembling in his arms. As he pressed soft kisses to Sungmin’s forehead, he whispered, “Shh, it’s okay, babe. I’m here,” he repeated, “I’m here.”
Sungmin relaxed at Kyuhyun’s soothing voice and rested his bodyweight on his lover, knowing that he’d always be there to hold him when he got too tired to stand on his own.
“Kyu, it’s not true, right? It’s just an April’s Fools prank, isn’t it?” The trace of desperateness in Sungmin’s voice pained Kyuhyun and he wanted very much to tell him ‘Yes, it’s just a prank’, but the words died on his lips because they both knew what was coming would still come even if they tried so hard to believe it wouldn’t.
He could only hold Sungmin closer to him as he rubbed soothing circles down the smaller man’s back, “It’s okay, Min. I’ll be here with you.” There was nothing he could do; it was beyond his abilities -beyond everyone’s abilities- to stop the end that was drawing near. But it was within his abilities to stay with the man he loved more than anything else till the very end.
With Kyuhyun by his side, Sungmin calmed down and they sat close to each other in front of the coffee table as they planned their last days. Both men were logical and rationale by nature, and they knew they could not control what was to come, but they could control how they reacted.
The plan was really simple -call up their friends, and when they’ve done that, spend the rest of the time together. How is three days enough to replace forever? Sungmin silently thought, but he shook that thought off and put on a smile as Hyukjae and Donghae’s faces appeared on the monitor.
Heechul and Hankyung were the last pair they contacted. After Super Junior had disbanded ten years ago, the two of them moved to China where Heechul proceeded to open Petals Florist, which was located next to Hankyung’s restaurant. Sungmin and Kyuhyun had visited them a few times, but they’d gone less in the recent years, after all, China was really far from Provence, so it was particularly heartwarming to see Hankyung and Heechul’s faces (‘beautiful, astonishing, flawless, face,’ or so he’d like to say).
“Yah, you two rascals, why am I the last?” Sungmin could see Heechul trying very hard to show an angry diva face, but failing ultimately. Even so, he played along like how they always used to, and immediately tried to appease his anger. “We saved the finale for you, hyung.”
Heechul’s lips quirked into his trademark smirk and Sungmin sighed softly, knowing that he’ll never get to see that smirk again. The four men looked at each other through the computer screen as they avoided the reason for doing so.
Finally, Heechul decided to break the silence (as always), “Earth sucks. I’m going back to Mars with Geng in three days.”
“Hyung, we’ll be ten seconds behind you.” Kyuhyun replied dryly, with a similar smirk. Sungmin chuckled softly at their resemblance, remotely wondering how the two of them could talk about it so casually. He allowed a tear to roll down his cheek as they said their goodbyes. The last thing he saw was Heechul and Hankyung mouthing ‘Saranghae’ to the both of them before the screen went blank, and he buried his face in Kyuhyun’s chest as he sobbed.
Sungmin was never afraid of death. It was a natural occurrence, but the end was coming too soon; too sudden. He cried for his hyungs, because China would be hit first, ten seconds earlier than Provence; he cried for everything he was about to lose in three days -his home, his friends, his family and his love.
Kyuhyun bent down and gently kissed away the tears that stained Sungmin’s cheeks as he curled an arm around his waist protectively. He led Sungmin back to their bedroom before going to the bookshelf and pulled out photo albums.
They spent the afternoon reminiscing the old times -when they were still performing as Super Junior; when they held their last concert; when they exchanged their vows in front of the other members in a small church in Montreal; when they first moved to Provence… Memories of the past flooded their minds and they sat side by side laughing and crying for the times they spent, and the time they’d never have.
That night, Sungmin curled up beside Kyuhyun while he sung song after song until the both of them drifted to sleep.
Kyuhyun woke up to the smell of coffee and toast and he wished he hadn’t woken up. One day lesser and two more days to go. He shut his eyes tight as he willed the tears that had unknowingly collected at the corners of his eyes. Of course he was sad; he was beyond sad. It was painfully difficult to swallow the fact that he had less than forty-eight hours to spend with Sungmin. That was far from enough.
He felt warm fingertips wiping off the tears at the corners of his eyes, and he instinctively moved closer to the source of the warmth -Sungmin. They sat there in comfortable silence, Kyuhyun’s head on Sungmin’s lap, until Sungmin bent down to press a kiss on his cheek and said, “Come on Kyu, breakfast is getting cold.”
While Sungmin cleaned up after breakfast, Kyuhyun went to their garden with his tools and started to dig a hole in the ground. After he was done with the dishes, Sungmin grabbed his guitar and sat on the steps, strumming words of love he didn’t have time to say while he watched Kyuhyun with a loving gaze he never knew he had.
Some time later, Kyuhyun motioned for him to come over, and all he said to Sungmin was, “Watch.” So he did.
He watched as Kyuhyun engraved their names on a piece of silver ornament they’d gotten from Paris some years ago. He watched as Kyuhyun engraved ‘I will love you forever’. He watched as Kyuhyun dropped the ornament into the deep hole he’d dug in the ground.
Then he couldn’t watch anymore. He squatted down next to Kyuhyun and whispered ‘I love you’ over and over again until they completely buried the ornament under soil and he couldn’t tell whether it was droplets of perspiration or tears that were trickling down their cheeks.
After dinner, they lay in bed as they talked about the life they shared together. It wasn’t easy for them, as men, as celebrities, as people living in a conservative society, but they made it through. Nothing stopped them; they cleared everything in their way and walked down the aisle together, eventually walking down the pathway of life.
Kyuhyun talked about their honeymoon in Cannes and how he’d piggyback Sungmin on the beach, “Min… you know, I was lying when I said you weren’t heavy at all.” Sungmin slapped his arm and did not hesitate to remind Kyuhyun of how he had to carry a certain genius around the house because said genius had so intelligently sprained his ankle while trying to moonwalk. Kyuhyun opened his mouth as he tried for a witty comeback, only to realize he had none. The two of them stared at each other before bursting into laughter; laughing at the old times; laughing at their silliness, but all the more thankful for those moments together.
Kyuhyun stared at Sungmin for a minute before he leaned in to ghost his lips over a patch of inked skin on Sungmin’s chest. He had an identical one on his chest -an identical ring. Sungmin never asked for much; he barely asked for anything; he was always more of a giver -which was why Kyuhyun found himself at a tattoo parlor without any hesitation ten years ago.
He kissed his way up to Sungmin’s neck, and he left his mark there, marking Sungmin as his, forever his and only his. The smaller man lying underneath him was responding with overloading passion, and he was ready to return with more. Lost in the warm tingly feeling of skin on skin and whispers of love, both men allowed themselves to fall into a web of love and desire; and they were willing to stay trapped in there forever -if only they could.
Sungmin woke up in Kyuhyun’s arms, for a moment, he wasn’t quite sure if he was alive, because the surroundings seemed completely different. Only after blinking a few times and contemplating the room, he realized they were still in their bed; their clothes were still carelessly strewn across the floor. The only difference and the most obvious difference were the walls and windows -every inch was covered with photographs.
There were photographs of them together; of the other boys (men) whom they shone on the stage with; of Sungmin alone (which he didn’t know they existed); of Kyuhyun alone (which he didn’t know Kyuhyun knew they existed). Sungmin stared at all these memories and all of a sudden, he felt so completed, because he knew they’d made enough memories to take along with them.
He turned in Kyuhyun’s arms as he rested against the other man’s chest and murmured, “I never knew you were so romantic, Kyu.” The other man didn’t reply, but Sungmin could feel his smile through the kiss he’d pressed on the top of his head.
Minutes or hours could have passed, but Sungmin wouldn’t know, because to him, it seemed like eternity as he rested his head on Kyuhyun’s chest just to listen to the rhythm of his heartbeat. But he knew it was time when he saw the slightest tinge of red in the sky.
Kyuhyun laced their fingers together as he leaned in so that their foreheads touched, “You remember when I said I’d love you till the end of the world?” Sungmin nodded. “I take that back.” He tilted their heads just so that their lips could brush slightly, before he continued, “I don’t want to love you till the end of the world. I want to love you forever. I want to love you even after the end of the world.”
Ten seconds
“I know,” Sungmin replied softly. He wanted to tell Kyuhyun that he knew all along that Kyuhyun wouldn’t just love him till the end of the world, because he wanted to love Kyuhyun even longer than that, and he knew that Kyuhyun wanted the same. He didn’t have enough time to say all that, but he knew that Kyuhyun knew. Because he just did.
Three seconds
Their gazes met, and locked.
One second
And then it was eternity.
