Ninomiya Kazunari sat at his favourite spot in the playground- a cool, shady spot under a huge plastic elephant. It was cool, relatvely clean (compared to the icky sandbox) and the elephant was yellow, his favourite colour. He looked out into the playground.

Hot.
Noisy.
Sandy.

It was not his day. he could see his two friends playing in the sandbox- one of them being the tallest boy in class and the other being the smartest. Those two boys are none other than Aiba Masaki and Sakurai Sho.

"Nino-kuuun! Come over and play! Sho-chan and I are about to build a sandcastle!" the rather tall boy called, waving cheerfully at him. Nino wrinkled his nose and relaxed in his spot, closing his eyes to sleep. Soon, he was awoken by his kindergarten teacher.

"Everyone! We are having a new classmate today! Are you excited to meet your new friend?" the teacher said happily. The children in the class cheered. All.. except Nino. He could barely even feel excited about much in school, let alone another new student. Just then...

"Ohno-kun, please come in!" the teacher called.

A few seconds later, a short, tanned boy shuffled slowly into the room with a rather shy expression on his face.Nino found himself staring at the boy's adorable features- chubby cheeks with a ruddy complexion, sleepy eyes of mahogany... somehow, he could not take his eyes off him.

"Ohno Satoshi," the boy introduced himself rather timidly, "please take care of me." The teacher looked around for an empty seat in the class.

"Ah. Ohno-kun, please sit next to Jun-kun over there!" the teacher said. Everyone's eyes turned to look at the handsome boy with curly black hair and thick eyebrows. Jun smiled happily and patted the seat next to him.

Ohno strolled over uncertainly to the seat and sat down.

"I'm Matsumoto Jun," the boy with thick eyebrows said, holding out a hand, "good to see you!" Ohno took the friendly hand and shook it gratefully. Nino bit his lip as he faced the front of the class. He decided that he must get close to the new boy somehow. And then it occurred to him that he would probably need someone to show him around the school.

The hours flew by as lessons commenced, and soon it was time for lunch. Nino toddled over to the teacher.

"Sensei," he asked, "I want to show Ohno-kun around the school. May I?"

The teacher gave him a visibly surprised look. Nino was a rather shy and soft-spoken boy, so for him to volunteer to take a new student around the school was indeed something to be surprised at.

"S-sure, why not? Ohno-kun! Over here please!"

Ohno looked up from his bento when he heard his name. He turned to see the teacher waving him over, and beside her stood a boy slightly smaller in build. His eyes were an alluring shade of brownish gold, and a small mole was set on one side of his chin. His body shook with anticipation as he headed towards them.

"Ohno-kun, I believe you do not knowyour way around, so Nino-kun here will how you the rest of our school, ne?"

The boy nodded politely at him. "I'm Ninomiya Kazunari, but you can call me Nino, Ohno-kun!"

"Nino-kun, bring him back when the bell rings, alright? The last time you showed Sho-kun around, you stayed out and never came back until I realised he came back without you."

"Sensei," Nino said, "that time, I wanted to sle-"

"Never mind. Just bring him back later."

"No problem. Ohno-kun, let's go!" Without waiting for Ohno to answer, Nino took OHno by the hand and dragged him away from the classroom.

Nino wandered the other rooms with Ohno, pointing out which rooms he had seen, which he had not, what the rooms he knew were for...

"We use this room for music lessons," Nino said, "and I daresay that I am one of the top students in the class for music." Ohno looked at him in awe.

"What do you do in music class? Play an instrument? Sing?" he asked.

"We do a good deal of both," Nino said," and feel free to ask sensei about how well I sing." Nino gave him a wink and led him out to the playground.

"What do you like to do in the playground, Nino-kun?" Ohno asked. Nino pointed to the yellow plastic elephant he had rested beneath just hours ago.

"I usually sit here and watch everyone else play," Nino said,"I don't really like playing out in the sun much."

Ohno frowned. "Why? Doesn't it get a little lonely there?" Nino shook his head in reply.

"I like it in this spot," Nino said as he retreated to sit under the elephant, "it is less noisy here. And less hot too. I don't like getting all sweaty and itchy from the sand."

Ohno tilted his head curiously as he followed Nino's example to sit beneath the elephant. He looked outside in amazement.

"It seems like a completely different world out there!" Ohno said, stretching out his legs as he relaxed.

"It is much cooler here, isn't it? That's why I like it here." Ohno nodded as they stared out into the distance, a comfortable silence falling between them.

"Ne, Nino-kun," Ohno said,"can I come back here and sit with you tomorrow?"

"Sure, but what would you do here?" Nino asked. Ohno smiled, reaching into his pocket to take out a small notebook, handing it to Nino. Nino flopped the cover over to reveal a beautifully drawn guppy.

"Wow... you are really good at this! You can easily top our class in art!" Nino gushed as he flipped to the next page to see a sketch of a goldfish.

And then a koi fish.
And then a carp.
And then a shark.

Ohno felt pride swelling in his chest until...

".... they are all fishes.." Nino commented.

Ohno did not see that remark coming. He looked back down, pouting and puffing out his cheeks.

"But I like fishes..." Ohno murmured, and felt Nino's stubby fingers poking at his cheeks.

"See? See? You even look like one now. A balloon fish!" Nino teased.

"You mean a pufferfish, don't you?" Ohno said.

"Yeah, and you still look like one now!" Nino joked and the two boys laughed just as the bell rang. They then headed back to class, their hands clasped together.

Back in class, Ohno could not stop thinking about his new friend. He looked over to see Nino's eyes staring right back at him. He grinned and puffed out his cheeks, making the other boy giggle. The teacher whirled around to look at Nino.

"Nino-kun? Is something wrong?" she asked. Nino hurriedly shook his head and looked at the board. The teacher shrugged and resumed her lesson. Nino looked back at Ohno reproachfully, only to be greeted by another adorable puffing of cheeks, this time making both of them giggle uncontrollably. The teacher sighed and turned to look at Ohno and Nino.

"Ohno-kun, Nino-kun, do you promise to be quiet when I'm talking if I let you two sit together?"

The pair bowed their heads and nodded. But Nino was secretly happy that they were finally sitting together.

And as they promised, they remained quiet throughout the class, a knowing smile gracing their lips as they stared at the teacher, their hands joined beneath the table.

"My hands are fat, aren't they?" Nino whispered as they watched the numbers scribble across the board, "they look like hamburgers."

Ohno looked at him for a moment, and played with Nino's fingers.

"I don't think so. They look cute to me," he replied.

Nino hid his blushing face as he felt their fingers entwine and his heart pounding wildly against his chest.

The next day...

"Ne, Nino-kun! Join us three for sandcastles!" Aiba called from the sandbox where Sho and Jun have started heaping up sand.

"You too, Ohno-kun!!" Jun yelled, waving towards the yellow plastic elephant.

But neither Ohno nor Nino could hear them, for they were huddle comfortable under the yellow elephant, with Nino resting his head on Ohno's shoulder. Ohno slept, leaning his head against Nino's, a pencil sketch of Nino's sleeping face lying loosely in his lap. The pair stayed together in dreamland, their hands joined and stubby fingers interlocked.
