The picture of Ohno Satoshi fluttered down from his hands onto the ground, and he picked it up in surprise, putting the old school yearbook down on the floor.

There in the picture, an 18-year-old Ohno stood holding up a freshly-caught squid and posing with a peace-sign. He flipped it over to read it some words on the back of it.

"Hey Nino!

Here's a photo of me with this huge squid~ It was so hard to catch but I finally got it!

This is the last time in a long while I'll probably be fishing Hokkaido before our examinations. It's sort of regrettable, isn't it?

Let's do something really fun soon before exams next February.

Ohno Satoshi."

"That idiot," Nino muttered with a resigned smile on his face, "always, ALWAYS thinking about fishes more than anyone else.."

He placed the photograph carefully on his table before continuing to clean out his shelf, placing the old yearbook into a cardboard box to throw away. He carried the box out of his apartment leaving it to be collected the next day. He looked at his watch, deciding to head down to the convenience store for his dinner.

It was yet another ordinary day for Ninomiya Kazunari- another day of lessons in Tokyo University. Another day of returning to a rather empty apartment. Another day of cooking food for nobody but himself. Another day of doing the laundry for only one person.

It was yet another day when he missed Ohno since he had left for Kyoto three years ago.

"I guess it always comes back to you, huh?" he muttered as he entered the store, looking around for his boxed dinner.

He fondly remembered the times when they had lived together as best friends while they were in high school. At times like this, Nino thought, Ohno would be chiding him and saying that he should try something new every once in a while rather than consume convenience food. And Ohno would sometimes even take the initiative to throw in some chahan ingredients into Nino's basket, squashing Nino's potato chips and earning a smack on the head from him.

His hand hovered lightly over the green peppers and onions before withdrawing them slowly away, turning his eyes to the instant curry mix just a distance away.

He had tried.

He had known himself to be so good at forgetting feelings once they are done with. He knew that fact from his past relationships with his ex-girlfriends. And yet... when it came to Ohno... there was just something about him that he could not let go of. It didn't matter that right at that moment that the 'old man' was probably sketching away on a canvas in Kyoto. His feelings for him had never changed from the moment he realised them, and they still lingered in him even as he tried dating girls in an attempt to forget him. As he proceeded to the cashier counter to pay for his chips, beer and convenience food, he wondered if there would ever come a day when he could walk away from his feelings and stay the best of friends with him.

Nino returned home, muttering "I'm back" even though he was sure no one would answer him. He left his groceries on the living room table, making himself comfortable on the sofa before switching on the television. He flipped past the news channel and some loud variety shows, and finally came across an interesting wildlife documentary on marine life. A smile crept up his face.

"Oh-chan would have liked seeing th-" Nino paused, his smile dropping.

Right. He was not there. Nino looked beside him, seeing the empty space on the couch before lounging down on it.

This wasn't the first time it has happened. Sometimes he would wake up in the morning, reaching for something beside him before realising that that space has been empty for a while now. He could remember their graduation picture together clearly with some regret.

"I should have smiled in that picture..." Nino whispered with a small tear in his eye.

"I'm moving to Kyoto," he had told him on their graduation day, and it felt like some bomb had dropped onto Nino's head.

"I have received an offer from the art college there," Ohno said, "and I want to pursue my career as an illustrator. So..."

"Oh.. congratulations!" Nino said, trying his best not to reach out and shake the his best friend by the neck and never stopping unless he said he would not go.

Ohno then tugged him close for a long embrace before asking if they could take a photo together. Nino nodded slowly, but part of him could not find any reason to smile at all.

"If only that old man did not smile either," Nino thought, "I'd feel less bad about all of this." He thought. Disregarding the fact that he had lessons the next day, he popped the can of beer open and drank to his heart's content before slipping under the covers while drunkenly calling Ohno's name and murmuring something about 'coming back, you baka'.

The lights in the apartment stayed on as the drunk man slept on peacefully, not hearing the sound of a door lock clicking or the loud creak of the apartment door opening. A figure shuffled in slowly, carrying his huge suitcase behind him and setting them gently by the doorway. He looked around with a light frown before hurrying to the fridge for a look. He shook his head at the sight.

"When did he last eat something decent.." he mumbled as he closed the fridge. He tiptoed over to Nino's room, sitting down beside him while watching him sleep. The moonlight beamed down on his face, and the shadows cast made his flushed cheeks glow in the dark. He smiled as he patted Nino on the head, drawing close to press his lips on his cheek.

He then shuffled slowly over to where his luggage was, taking out something from it. He then hurried over to Nino's room, placing it on the side of Nino's bed. He then went over to the sofa and slept there.

Nino woke up the next day, looking at the time on his alarm clock and deciding that he was too tired to go for lessons that day. He sat up, stretching and massaging his head. He rubbed his eyes as he swung his legs down from the bed before looking up.

And there, in front of him, lay a canvas painting- a portrait of him. He looked at the way the figure's jet black hair falls to the front of his forehead, the way those mischievous eyes twinkle and the way those lips were curled in a charming smile with a mole on his chin to complement it.

There was only one person who could do that, and his heart started pounding hard out of his chest as he found himself running out of the room into the kitchen.

And there he was- Ohno Satoshi, busying himself with the frying pan while cooking up some chahan.

Three years had changed his best friend from an adorable teen to a stunning, grown man. He could tell that his face became more adorable and yet more handsome at the same time, and that his average figure had become more slim and toned. Ohno tossed the rice skillfully in the pan before turning it off and taking a plate from beside him. He then turned to see Nino staring wide-eyed at him, his jaw close to dropping on the floor.

"Ah! Nino! Good morning~" Ohno said with a gentle smile on his face. Nino said nothing but went straight over to him, pulling him roughly into a fierce hug. Ohno laughed as he returned the hug.

"You stupid old man," Nino complained as he pounded his fists against his chest, making Ohno yelp a little in pain, "leaving me all alone in here while you happily paint your way around in Kyoto and not bothering to mail me, you insensitive, cruel, selfish jerk.."

"I was about to ask YOU why you never mailed me!" Ohno asked in surprise.

"Well, I was waiting for you to send me something! If you did I would have sent something back!" Nino protested.

"But I was waiting for YOU to send me something..." Ohno replied with a pout. Nino sighed exasperatedly before turning away with a huff. He felt his skin tingle as he felt Ohno step close behind him, winding his arms around his waist and resting his chin on one of his shoulders.

"I was just teasing. I'm sorry," Ohno whispered, "well, what do you think of it?"

"Of what?" Nino asked.

"... the painting," Ohno said simply. Nino looked at him in surprise.

"Well.. it was very well done," Nino commented, "the features and all were correct and.."

"No, not that!" Ohno said. Nino blinked, completely confused.

"... You did not look behind it now, did you?" Ohno said. Nino blinked and went back into the room, taking the canvas painting to look behind it.

Nino stared in complete surprise as he read the words that were painted neatly in black.

"There is no love like the first."

Nino turned to see Ohno standing in the doorway, visibly blushing with much embarrassment.

"...All this while?" Nino asked. Ohno nodded slowly and almost uncertainly.

"And I've missed you since I left," Ohno answered honestly, holding his gaze into Nino's eyes, as if searching for some indication. Nino sighed, placing the painting down beside the bed. Ohno felt his heart sink and was about to leave when he was stopped by Nino's firm words.

"Come over here," Nino ordered. Ohno looked at him in surprise. Nino rolled his eyes and reached over, pulling him roughly away from the doorway before shoving the door close with Ohno's back, capturing his lips with his own. Ohno gave a gasp of surprise as he felt Nino clutch him close, moving his lips so passionately like it was the last time he should ever kiss him again. They drew apart a while later, panting breathlessly.

"That does it," Nino said, "I'm done with staying as best friends when I know that I want more than that."

Ohno could not help but trace Nino's pink cheeks with his slender fingers as he tried to convince himself that he was not dreaming.

"Your will to keep us as friends isn't as strong as it used to be, clearly," Ohno teased.

"Shut up, old man," Nino grumbled and stole his lips once again.
