The Doctor Is In - For the Sick
St. John’s test results had come back after a few hours and Hope ran them again just to make sure there wasn’t an error in her machines. Of course there wasn’t. The second results were the same as the first and it made her wonder. While the white blood cell count was slightly elevated it wasn’t anything that screamed to her obvious infection. It was a real medical mystery, which shouldn’t make her as happy as it did. Just because she was bored working at the camp didn’t mean she could wish mystery illnesses on everyone. Even if they would liven things up for her.
She took the results back with her to the medical building. She wanted to work from there instead of the lab where only certain staff could reach her very easily. Perhaps she was hearing zebras too early but she didn’t think St. John’s stomach pains were something simple. In her office, she grabbed her medical texts, a pad of yellow paper and the test results.
Lists were a specialty of hers. She listed St. John’s symptoms in a column, the test results in another and finally one for a list of potential causes. She occasionally referenced her medical texts, but they were mostly there so she could flip through pages while her mind worked on the problem she had presented it with. Hope thought better when her hands were busy.
A knock interrupted her work, but she didn’t look up. “Yes?”
The nurse told her that a new patient had shown up. Hope sighed to herself and told the woman to get them a bed. She put her doctor’s coat on, set her puzzle aside and went to do her job.
