Summary: As promised, Treize returns to the hut the next day to check on Zechs. Some reasons are revealed...

Treize walked towards the other hut, having waited until later in the day. He had a feeling there were probably hangovers, and he hadn't wanted to disturb anyone. He knocked lightly on the door, waiting a moment before stepping inside.

Zechs was actually in his room, sitting on the bed, staring out the window. He vaguely heard the knock on the door, but didn't do anything about it. He didn't even call out to the person, remaining rather silent and sullen, rather like how he was most of the time after the Sanq Kingdom fell.

Treize headed in that direction, noting that no one was in the living room. Not wanting to disturb Alberich, he once again knocked lightly on the bedroom door. "Zechs?" he called quietly.

"Yes?" he asked curtly, not even bothering to look towards the door.

"May I come in?"

"I won't stop you."

Treize held back a sigh. Obviously, the mood had not improved. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him.

He didn't do anything to acknowledge his friend, icy eyes turned out to the window.

Treize sat down. "I can't imagine you had a pleasant morning," he said.

"Had worse."

"Perhaps," he said. "You know there is nothing that can be done to change the past, so I won't lecture you. However, I do understand the consequences of making a decision to leave loved ones behind."

"I should have stayed at home... I should have..." He slammed his fist against the wall, ignoring the way it throbbed when he did so.

"We can always look back and think of what we should have done, but it doesn't change what we did. There's no point in getting depressed over it." Treize sighed. "I did consider remaining last night, possibly drinking away my regret over my decisions with that last battle... in leaving Lady Une. But, I didn't. Because it doesn't help."

"But it does take away the hurt, if only momentarily."

"It only numbs the senses," Treize said. "It doesn't fix anything."

"Who said anything about fixing the damn problem? If I wanted to do that. I'd find a way to make sure you lived."

Treize shook his head.

He sighed.

"I don't know what else to tell you," he said. "There is only so much we can do to affect fate."

"I've never been big on fate. You know that Treize. I just want... Nevermind."

"Tell me."

"Why does it matter what I want? I'm stuck here."

"Because it's nice to share," Treize offered.

Zechs snorted.

Treize laughed a bit. "Come now... You know my mother hated these moods of yours as a child."

He looked at Treize. "I'm not acting like a child."

"No... not quite."

He huffed and looked away.

"Brooding, she'd say." Treize smiled a bit.

"I liked your mother."

"She liked you. I could never figure out why... You were such a dark child." Treize understood why, that wasn't what he was getting at.

He smiled softly and leaned against the wall, his hair in a loose twist over his shoulder.

"It's one thing to regret," Treize said softly. "It's another thing to dwell on it. I know you're upset with how things turned out... but you need to focus elsewhere. Not on what's happened, but on finding a way to change it."

"Change it how Treize? No matter what I do, no matter what I try... I can't find a way off this island and if I don't keep my promise to Noin, she'll come looking for me and..."

"You don't know that," Treize said. "I was only teasing when I mentioned it. If anything, with so many of you here, she'll have more work to worry about and won't get the chance."

"You know her as well as I do Treize."

"Yes... I do. And I know she has a firm head on her shoulders to go with that strong personality."

Zechs nodded, smiling gently.

"I don't doubt she'd consider it, but something tells me she'll be more likely to hold back against that temptation than Miss Schbeiker was."

"Noin may have the impluses that Miss Schbeiker has, but she does control them." He commented finally looking at his friend.

"She does," Treize said. "I think she'll be fine."

"I hope so."

Treize nodded.

Zechs smiled. "I'm sorry about yesterday."

"It's alright," Treize said. "As I said, I was sorely tempted to join you."

"I'm glad that you din't Treize."

"As am I... Otherwise, I might have found myself on your couch and very cross this morning." He chuckled.

Zechs chuckled. "Remember when we where both able to go drinking and the first time we both got drunk together?"

"Unfortunately, yes," Treize said, amused. "I also remember the aftermath of that as well."

"We were rather drunk and your parents where ready to murder us."

Treize nodded. "Of course, I think they decided the hangover headaches and nausea were punishment enough."

"Which I'm rather grateful for. It's been so long since I've been this hungover."

"I think they're harder to recover from as you get older, as well..." Treize mused.

"I'm not that old!"

Treize chuckled.

He laughed too, smiling. "I don't think your parents where expecting us to get as drunk as we did."

"Probably not." He smiled at his friend, glad he was coming around again.

"If I remember correctly we got drunk together on two seperate occasions." Zechs commented.

"You weren't supposed to get drunk the first time," Treize reminded him. Being five years apart had given them two opportunities for coming of age parties.

"What can I say? I was a very stubborn twelve year old."

Treize chuckled.

He smiled at his friend.

"Feeling a bit better?" he asked.

"I am... Thank you."

Treize nodded.

He groaned and rubbed his forehead.

Treize chuckled. "Well, mostly better." He stood, handing him the bottle of aspirin he'd brought along. "Here."

"Just what every hangover victim needs." He commented dryly as he took the bottle.

Treize smiled. "Enjoy... let me know if you need anything. I'll let you get some rest."

Zechs nodded at Treize. "Again, thank you. For everything my old friend."

"You're welcome." He gave Zechs a nod and stepped out, amused.
