Ten minutes of what goes on in my mind (consider yourself warned)

Today I went from “will this field of study be right for me” to “are humans, in fact, a disease- a blemish on the face of this planet”.  Let’s try to retrace the steps.

In AGNR 198 I was challenged by the fact that most of us would probably be changing majors… again.  The guest teacher (John Kaminski) told us of how he went from landscape architecture, which he said dealt mainly with hardscapes, to turf grass pathology.  So I got to thinking what else might interest me, when the other guest teacher (Steve Ratcliffe) mentioned something about how he applied golf course maintenance to preservation by how he used the extra land between holes.  Conservation, I think- perhaps I could do something with this turf grass thing and apply it to conserving areas destroyed by humans.  So now I’m thinking well obviously I don’t want to be a golf course superintendent, so perhaps something with field research.  Okay, so now I’m thinking of some kind of bio research major when it pops into my head ‘but can I make enough money doing that?’

Okay so here’s where I make a giant leap in values- we all say we can do this, but it’s really something few actually go ahead and do.  Here it is-

I don’t need to follow my parents into the middle class.  Sure, it’s nice having stuff, but what if I can’t find something that makes me happy and get me money.  There might be a life outside of what I was raised with that is perfectly satisfying.  I don’t need to have a suburban house with lawn, two kids, and a beautiful wife.

Another big leap here, but of a different kind

Maybe this is why humans are fucking up the planet.  Simply cause they want to have a family and lots of stuff.  Something so simple, but applied on a global level to a species that can avoid death so easily, everyone propagating is a serious problem.  Some species have the tendency to cut themselves off at a certain point and stop reproducing or start killing themselves (i.e. lemmings).  Why is it that an intelligent species cannot figure out when it is time to stop reproducing?

So, in conclusion, I’m going to apply myself to conservation research, throw monetary gains to the four winds and hook up with someone who is willing to adopt instead of reproduce and start a vast global movement towards limiting human population because we are destroying our future as a race by destroying the environment we depend on.

Peace out   :-P
