I think you have a point here. This whole thing has been spun as a big fight between right and left, and in the end we get a plan that makes nobody happy except the insurance companies. And, it's not so surprising, given the money they've spent on the legislation creators.

I posted recently about a plan that Milton Friedman, of all people, proposed that I'd be willing to consider. His plan, or a version of it, involves having the government supply universal high-deductible catastrophic health insurance (who knew Friedman was a socialist), eliminating Medicare and Medicaid and getting rid of the cluster fuck that is employer-based insurance. I'm not crazy about this, we'd need to say more about how we'd help poor people, but I'd be willing to consider it because it makes some progress towards the problem of some basic injustices in distribution and I think it would bring down costs. I think this is a compromise the right and the left could agree with (I'd love to hear from liberals and conservatives as to whether they agree) but it most certainly does not, unlike all the bullshit we've seen in Congress, maintain the status quo for the insurance companies. In other words, compromise between right and left is possible, what's not possible is compromise with the insurance companies.
