Another link along the "sanitary buffer zone" around Russia is about to get cracked. And Putin must be writhing with anxiety in his chair up there in the Kremlin.

Transnistria would join Mother Russia and Moldova would join the EU. Problem solved.

Unless Europe can provide a viable alternative to Moldova for the Russian market (Russia is actively using its economic influence on Moldova as a lever to influence its decisions), I'm not seeing a workable scenario for Moldova that would put them on the path to prosperity. I think Romania could be instrumental in this respect, in becoming Moldova's gateway to Europe. But first, the Romanian leaders will have to abandon the nationalist rhetoric, and adopt a more pragmatic approach to their cousin neighbours, instead of throwing sensationalist bombs and hints about a possible absorption of their country into some sort of pipe-dream Great Romania.

The new RO president has good relations with Merkel, he can help Moldova to reach favorable trade accords with the EU. In any case Moldovans are our Romanian brothers so they don't deserve to be subordinated to Russia's imperialistic aspirations.

Oh Bulgarians were everywhere, before Moldova even existed as a principality. Thing is with nomads you can never know where they'll end up 1300 years later, much like the Roma people ;-0
