Had another content presentation practice session this afternoon. Because of my travel schedule with the two major classes I already teach, learning this new material has been slightly slower going -- I keep getting pulled out of my training schedule to go on the road with my primary class this month, for instance -- but I'm getting there. Felt a little better about this topic going into it. I still present a more "nervous" version of myself teaching to my peers (aka coworkers who know more about the subject than I do) than I do in my real classes. Got good constructive criticism, got some tough but beneficial questions ("do I really have to put that mark in exactly that spot ..." types of things).
One of my coworkers feels the need to re-instruct me, every time she sees me present, on the "basics" of teaching -- her heart is in the right place, but she doesn't seem to get the point that I have been a teacher, in one setting or another, since 1985 (even if I wasn't actually accredited until 1993). I know how to play to students' strengths and weaknesses, how to incorporate different learning styles, how to use different materials to reiterate a point. I also know how to cross-market, another thing she is big on -- fifteen minutes today spent discussing how to make people realize how special our course materials are. I understand the concept of building loyalty and pointing out, especially in this economy, why they should keep coming back to us. In fact, a large part of my primary course is exactly that -- there is no federal traiing requirement on that topic so I am fully aware that I need to market, market, market.
Anyway. That' s a minor issue and the session went well.
Tonight: drop coworker Kelly off to meet his wife in town, pick up my meds, get dinner, get a haircut, then decide if I have the mental wherewithal to continue working on chapter 14, or if I need to take a break, read, do more laundry, watch a movie ....
