Spray day

I'm sitting here, trying to convince myself to get up and spray weeds. Once again, I've got drifts of Veronica hederefolia infesting my back yard, and they're in bloom, so I have to get them before they set seed. I had hoped that I had got them early enough last year that I wouldn't have to deal with so many this year, but no...

I woke up early this morning, spontaneously, even though I had my alarm set for 8am. I went to the SL temple at 10 am to witness the sealing of that woman from Congo to her husband and son. They were already married secularly--they just got the religious ceremony done. It gave me the opportunity to see the Temple Square plantings. The daffodils are at their peak, and a few early tulips in warm places are also out. As are scads of pansies of all hues, mostly purple and blue. I can't imagine having to plant that many pansies by hand, every stinking year. At least the bulbs come up year after year. And when it gets warm, they pull up the pansies and plant truckloads of annuals, which they then pull up at the end of the season. Rinse and repeat.

Recorded an episode last night of Jeeves and Wooster, a BBC production from the early 90s featuring Stephen Fry (who reads the HP books on tape for the UK) and Hugh Laurie. It was the first episode, and it has one of my favorite scenes in it, where Bertie is playing the piano and singing "Minnie the Moocher," but figures it's missing something during the call and response part. So he asks Jeeves to provide the response. "Ho dee ho dee ho dee ho," sings Bertie. "Ho dee ho dee ho, sir," responds Jeeves. "Ra de ra de ra de ra," sings Bertie. "Ra de ra de ra, sir," responds Jeeves.

"I don't mean to be overly critical, Jeeves," says Bertie, stopping the song. "I know you're doing your best. I just think we could dispense with the 'sir' at the end of every line. I mean, it does show the proper feudal spirit and all, but it does play merry hell with the rhythm thing."

Precious. Of course, Hugh played the piano for real.

As for the icon, that's from last week's episode. (I stole it from someone. No, I don't have screen-cap software for the TV.) In which House plays practical jokes on a very annoyed Wilson, who in the end gets him back by filing partway through his cane. As for the etymology of "pwned," you'll have to see here.

UPDATE: I can't resist...
