Cherries and Uncle Jack

Exciting things today:

1) I slept better last night.  Still not fantastic but getting there.  My mother-in-law read somewhere that if your eat between 10-20 cherries sometime in the evening before you go to bed, it will help you sleep better.  She, Lucas' grandmother and I all have trouble sleeping, so we've all tried it with fresh cherries from my dad.  Last night was the first night I tried it and by golly if I didn't sleep a little better.  I don't know if it's the placebo effect or not, but it gives me a chance to eat cherries and it can't hurt, so why not?  We've been getting to bed at these weird times, though, which I'm sure does not help!  Last night, for example, we were up 'til like 2 am because Lucas decided he wanted to play hymns around midnight.  Neither of us were tired so I was on the couch reading while he played around on the keyboard.  It was nice, actually.  We have no upstairs or sideways neighbors.  We can make as much noise as we want.  I cannot *wait* to get things cleaned up enough so that I can pull out my saxophones and get practicing again.  I really want to bring my bari sax up from home and get back to work on that, too.  It's been far too long since I've made music like that.

2) We put out our trash for pickup tomorrow morning, and we put something in the mailbox to mail.  It doesn't sound like much, but after five years of apartment living it's kind of a thrill to be able to do that.

3)  We've been watching birds come up to our new bird feeder.  It's hilarious.  There are these bigger birds who try to get up there, but they're too big for the little perches so they grab on and flap their wings to keep their balance while they eat, but it spins the feeder around in a circle.  They hang on as long as they can, and then they fall off.  They poke around the ground for a bit and then try it again.  So funny.

4) We met up with our old pastor and his wife at their yard sale this morning.  They moved up here about three years ago and have been excited to hear about us coming here, too.  They promptly invited us over for dinner.  They're hosting their Uncle Jack, who is an 82 year-old Scotsman who has been a missionary for like 30 years or something.  He has this adorable accent that is not too thick but just makes a few words sound funny.  He was great fun!  He made dinner, which was this fantastic lasagna he learned how to make in Italy, and it was delicious.  It was amusing because he was easily the most talkative of the group, and it was always something interesting, even though it was sometimes a beat or two behind the conversation.  Then we all went (kinda randomly) to play a round of putt-putt golf.  Uncle Jack came in second.  I came in last by about 13 points, because I can't play mini-golf.  Still, it was a good time.

BY THE WAY, speaking of good times, people still need to give davisac1  and I fun tasks to do on our road trip!  Hurry up, we have less than a week and want to see your suggestions!
