This frustrates me for many different reasons. However, I just want to point out this paragraph in particular:
"An attorney for the recording industry, Tim Reynolds, said the "greater weight of the evidence" showed that Thomas-Rasset was responsible for the illegal file-sharing that took place on her computer. He urged jurors to hold her accountable to deter others from a practice he said has significantly harmed the people who bring music to everyone.
Defense attorney Joe Sibley said the music companies failed to prove allegations that Thomas-Rasset gave away songs by Gloria Estefan, Sheryl Crow, Green Day, Journey and others."
Yes. File sharing significantly harms musicians. I'm sure Journey was crying themselves to sleep every night until this settlement came out.
So check this out:
"The Estefans' estimated net worth as of 2007 was approximately $500 million, according to an article in People En Espanol magazine (February 2007)."
I looked for the net worths of some of the other artists mentioned and can't find anything specific. However, I did find that the estimated net worth for the Green Day website is $113,164.60, Sheryl Crow's website is estimated at $2,051.30, and Journey's site is estimated at $62,144.90.
I'm sure glad we saved them all from bankruptcy and starvation. That $80,000 a song will surely save the recording industry from ruin and despair.
