Today I had the last of my reciprocal programs for Summer Reading Club. What happens is that, to fill our activity calendars without having to spend more money, staff members come up with programs that we do at different branches around the system. However many programs your branch sends out, that's how many programs from other branches you can bring in. I got pulled to do my program twice this summer, and luckily the two branches scheduled them so nicely that I had one yesterday, one today, and can take the rest of the summer off. Well, not really, but at least I don't have to do my program any more!
For my program, I took the book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg and had the kids use the stories in the book as writing prompts. We did one as a group - we answered the questions "Who, What, and Why" and then I did an off-the-top-of-my-head story with the elements they gave me - and then we spent the rest of the time with everyone writing quietly. Yesterday I did one with younger kids, like 22 of them, and they were way more interactive, helping them figure out what came next, exclaiming over their pictures, that sort of thing. Today I had like three teens and a 8 year old, and for about thirty-five minutes we jus sat quietly.
Not my best program ever, but it got kids writing, and it's over, haha.
Saturday is a GCC wedding, next weekend is Origins (which boggles my mind - how is it the end of June already??) and then we're into July, which is my vacation month, which I need desperately. Not going to lie, it's kind of an anticlimactic summer, considering that we thought we probably would be up and moving this summer and instead...we're not. But it's OK. We have lots of Star Trek to watch, and I get to leave work at 6 instead of 6:30, and God is in His heaven and all is right. :)
