More specifically, Scott Joplin. My grandmother was nice enough to get me a CD compilation of nearly every piece Scott Joplin wrote to assist me in learning many of them (a few years back, I bought a book of sheet music which included twelve of his pieces; all originals, not simplified versions). So far, it's help me to perfect Maple Leaf Rag and to figure out that silly syncopated rhythm in Elite Syncopations. I lurves it.
So, today was my first day back at SIUC for the new semester, and I must say it was very refreshing. Turns out I got a different teacher for my Sales Management class than the one I was expecting (Mr. Campbell, who I enjoyed in my Marketing class last semester), but I think I can live with it. My other class was canceled due to the teacher being ill and I guess Choral Union doesn't start until this Friday. Go figure, I was just glad not to have to spend seven to nine o'clock in class. Spent several hours at the radio station gearing things up. We're working on installing a new automation system which will pretty well turn everything over to a computer. There will literally be absolutely no need for a DJ when we get done (the computer will not only crossfade tracks and automatically select when to play commercials and PSA's, but it will also transmit song name, artist, album and label info to the end listener), but I guess they'll still be there to give it the "human" touch.
Got invited to a birthday party tomorrow. One of the guys who works at the station is having a bash out at Hangar 9. I suppose I should get over my distaste for bars and just go out. At least with the new Illinois smoking law, I'll not have to sit in a cloud of smoke all evening.
I've been a fan of the television series House for awhile, and I've since started to sift through some of the earlier work of Hugh Laurie, the man who plays Dr. House. I was actually quite surprised to discover he was British; his ability to mimic an American accent is quite a testament to his incredible acting chops. He starred in several popular BBC shows back in the late eighties and early nineties. I've been watching the comedy sketch show A Bit of Fry and Laurie and the more serious yet still comedic Jeeves and Wooster. Both of which he stars opposite Stephen Fry. I've never really had a celebrity that I've ever felt a strong urge to meet in person before, but after not only seeing his acting ability but also his ability to play the piano, I'd say that meeting him would be an honor.
Anyways, my new schedule for
WIDB is a little simpler than last semester's. I'll be on the air Mondays and Wednesdays from 2pm to 3pm and then on Friday's from 5pm to 6pm, the latter most likely will be becoming my Weekend Movie Review specialty show which I'll be doing along with the station's General Manager, Tom Finnegan (the title makes him sound older than he is...he's just another student around my age). Remember, all you need is a computer and a media player (Windows Media Player, WinAmp, etc.) to listen, which most of you reading this should already have.
Blah. I have class at nine tomorrow morning. I suppose I should probably hit the hay early this evening.
Laters...
