Pennsic VLI - War-week Tuesday
Tuesday 06:56

Awake early again. One good thing about my schedule is that it hasn't conflicted with the potty cleaning; I'm done long before they come. Clean potties after they come are nice, but everything's wet for a while after they hose them down. And I've had to wait for a potty only once in the morning (so far), using the resource off peak.

As an example of how there can be 50+ interesting classes in a day, there's 36 classes listed at 09:00, 13 that looked interesting (to me) from a quick scan, 7 are 1 hour long (10:00 conflicts with KWC rehearsal; 3 are 2 hours, 1 is 3 hours, and 1 is 4 hours):
  • Irish Brehon Law
This would be a different take on the earlier class using the Brehon laws to document Irish farming and food practices.
  • A History of the Settlement of Iceland
What drives people to settle such (humanly-)marginal places? (What were they looking for? What were they escaping?)
  • Sack of Rome, 1527
Who isn't interested in the sack of Rome?
  • The Cornett and the Serpent: Renaissance Brass?
    A must for music geeks.
It's a rare hour that doesn't have a class I'd want to take.

Wednesday 01:07

It's been a very busy day.

80 classes of interest; went to 2 classes, 3 rehearsals, a pilgrimage, a concert, played for royalty (a paying gig!), and played at a ball.

I started off with the Settlement of Iceland. The woman teaching this class might be married to the man who taught last Wednesday's class on the Icelandic Commonwealth.

Then KWC rehearsal - still making progress, fixing mistakes, entrances, tuning, pronunciation. I was cold - shivering - in rehearsal.

My 12:00 class was essentially a throw-away; I think I've taken it before. But another class I was sort-of interested in was crowded, and I was pretty late getting anywhere after rehearsal. I was able to sit in the sun, though.

Then we had the "Pilgrimage", which went past 14:00, ending up in the Bog. It was fun, and we got many compliments.

This conveniently left me positioned to pick up my recorders from my camp on the way to the Recorder Ensemble rehearsal. At camp I also found the music for the Royal Cocktail Party, and also found that we were wanted at 16:30, not 18:00. When the request for musicians came yesterday afternoon, I wasn't sure I was free at 18:00, but I was sure I was not free at 16:30. But
eftychia was there when the music arrived at our camp, and was available to play.

I went on to the KWRE rehearsal, and left it early for the Chorulus rehearsal (leaving the recorders at the KWRE tent).

After Chorulus I picked up my recorders (and heard a bit of the estampie class, which I would now have to miss for the gig) and went to the Cognizenti camp. DGlenn was there, with Lady Jolicia (KWRE co-leader) and 3 others. They had rehearsed a few things before I got there, but hadn't started providing background music. We played a bit, they fed us (from a fancy (but period-ish) buffet), and they paid us. Several people thanked us. (And we actually sounded pretty good. DGlenn said things went much better after I arrived. (Not to assume it was my presence; they were now seeing music they had gone through before.)) All in all, a very pleasant gig.

I realized I didn't need to take my recorders back down the hill to camp and back up the hill again for the Choral Ball; I could leave them in the Dance Tent.

Before the ball I went to hear Cantore Borealis, 7 women doing the bardic thing.

The Choral Ball went fine. ("Unique experience"? Not so; we did this last year too.) It seemed to go faster than I remember from last year. That may be because more of the music was now familiar. The dancers are always very appreciative.

I'd forgotten how cold I'd been all morning. It's chilly again this evening, and I was cold around mid-way through the dance. I should have brought a cape and had long sleeves and pants. I had a little time with Erin, whom I've had no classes with for 5 days now.

The dance ended about 23:45, and I came back to camp and had some (hot) chicken soup. Dinner tonight was leftovers from previous days.

The solar panel did better today, charging 3 AmpHrs. ☺ That's less than my average laptop use, though. ☹
Here's hoping the shower has hot water tonight....

Wednesday 01:59

The low-voltage alarm just went off on Vasilisa's batteries (which run the camp - refrigerator, CPAP, kitchen lights). It went off earlier, and has apparently gone off several times this evening. It's been quiet after a reset, but it either took 3 resets this time or things have been shut down. I don't think those solar panels are sufficient to cover the drain of the fridge, so the batteries aren't going to catch up on the sunny days.
