Pennsic VLI - War-week Wednesday
Wednesday 07:53

I've been up for a while, but didn't get on the laptop right away. I made several entries this morning (last night) after the last timestamp. I'm clearly not getting enough sleep. Playing for the ball last night made it much worse, getting back to camp close to midnight and then having dinner, and the compulsion some of my campmates have to hold discourse on personal historical anecdotes, generally unrelated to Pennsic or life before 1600 - there's really no polite way to disengage and retire to my tent, to update this journal, and then to bed (after appropriate ablutions).

I haven't had a chance to look over today's class schedule yet either. This is necessary to figure out whether/when to take instruments. I do know I'll need instruments, since the KWRE rehearses this afternoon, but do I need them with me all day?

Yesterday I finished off the bread I brought with me, and I'll be making sandwiches with camp bread the rest of the week. I should stop bringing bread since the camp has whole-wheat bread now. I'm putting the last of the leftover turkey breast into one of my sandwiches for lunch. I see this morning that all my ice has melted, so bringing back some ice would be another reason to come back mid-day (schedule permitting) and fetch instruments.

After a "quick" look at the schedule I see things I want to do from 12:00-15:00, and 15:00-17:00 will be rehearsals, so I won't be coming back to camp mid-day; recorders leave early.

Wednesday 22:09

195 classes of interest; went to 5 classes, 3 rehearsals, and a concert teaser.

The poisons class was full of info, but the presentation was just reading from notes (like the Nefarious Characters class last week). I left it early to get to rehearsal on time.

The gluten-free class conflicted with rehearsal; I would have liked to get that info for
aome.

The Marie de France class was interesting - some background material, and then a reading of one of her stories. She should be interesting reading (when I ever have time to read). This was the first class I've had with Erin this week. (We used to pick at least one class in common almost every day. She hasn't been going to many classes this war. (I'm also getting to fewer classes with all these rehearsals.))

The money class was interesting.

The synagogue trash in Cairo was an interesting story about a long-overlooked cache of information - and each person who went through it extracted and researched what (s)he thought was valuable information, and declared the rest worthless. But ancient shopping lists tell you what people were eating, and ancient contracts shed light on both parties.

More rehearsals. KWRE won't be anything astounding, but hopefully it will continue to grow in coming years. Chorulus will sound awesome. There's still tons we could improve, but we've had only 5 hours of rehearsal for 2 substantial pieces.

In the gap at 17:00 I stopped by to see Moll Sotherden. She's not doing the glass-fusing class this year. ☹

I didn't realize the bone whistle class was 2 hours; I didn't have time to finish before the KWC mini-concert/marketplace teaser. I should be able to finish the whistle with hand tools (Swiss-Army knife) on site or at home. I got to the food court with a few minutes to spare, and set up the audio recorder. I stopped at Moll's shop again to give her the class notes from the whistle workshop. (She has a friend who wants to make clay whistles.)

In her poems, the Lais of Marie de France, she describes beautiful ladies and the gallant, chivalrous knights they loved. Sometimes the ladies ride in to rescue their knights in distress. Preview of Thursday night's KWC concert. .wav recording

Dinner tonight was pizza (again). I didn't head back up the hill for Midnight Madness. I'm not interested in shopping. (And there isn't room in the car to bring back much of anything.)

Hoping to get to bed early tonight, but it's already getting late. It's chilly again, too. I've had a look at tomorrow's class schedule, and there's very few classes Friday. Tomorrow night's the KWRE, Chorulus, and KWC concerts. We won't have the 10:00-12:00, 15:00-16:00 (or 16:30), and 16:00-17:00 rehearsals, but the choirs will have a dress rehearsal and recording session 12:00-14:30 (beginning with the children and teens choirs).

Thursday 00:15

It's not early, but it's much earlier than last night.
