Pennsic VLI - War-week Monday
Monday 06:57

Awake early again.

The voltage out from the Optima battery has dropped to 11.8v. I think I'm going to need some solar charging to make it through the week. I hope filing the contacts clean last night makes some difference. (And if it does, I should find water-tight connectors to use instead next year.)

Today will be an instrument-lugging day, with KWC sectional rehearsals, the Choral Ball rehearsal, and the recorder ensemble.

Monday 22:55

75 classes of interest; went to 3 classes, 4 rehearsals, and a concert.

John Dee seems to have lead an interesting life, but I wish I'd noticed who the instructor was for the class; I remember him from a previous class (2014, according to this journal). There were several other choices for 09:00.

Log boats was interesting. Celtic music might have been more interesting, but Bog Univ was too far away.

The next 4 hours were 3 rehearsals. At the recorder-ensemble rehearsal there was a request for people to play at a party for SCA royalty tomorrow. Someone was supposed to drop off music at my camp, but I haven't seen it. (I'm sure a big recorder would be a hit. A photographer was at our rehearsal, and the great bass recorder definitely had to be in the photos.) It helped that I didn't need to take the recorders to the Chorulus rehearsal, and the class after that was where I'd left the recorders. (Yes, another day centered around the rehearsal tent, but half the rehearsals were elsewhere.)

Next, a class on Orlando di Lasso. We did surprisingly well reading through 3 of his motets with 6 people. I had actually sung a couple of them before, but today I was reading the bass line since I was the only male in the class. I think a 2nd soprano person from the class will be joining KWC tomorrow....

Ending the day, the Choir of the Debatable Lands. There was also singing tonight wandering the grounds at any camps that would favor us with beverages (and many, many will), but dinner was pretty late and I wasn't up to going out and about again.

09:001.0 hrA&S 1Passing Notes like a Russian with Birch BarkThl Sofya Chyudskaya SmolyaninaFrom the 11th to 14th centuries, Russian men, women, peasants, and even children knew how to read and write, and they used slips of birch bark for business and personal correspondence. Measles, smallpox, bubonic plague, anthrax and leprosy each had a devastating impact on the population physically, economically, psychologically, spiritually and artistically.
09:001.0 hrA&S 15The Life of John DeeVladamirJohn Dee was born to a world where a scholar was expected to know as much about magic as science. By the end of his life his association with magic discredited him, to the extent that many of his contributions and achievements were blurred in the history books. Modern scholarship has realized just how influential a role he played in constructing the modern world. More than just a simple history lesson, this class hopes to illustrate the mindset of people who lived in Elizabethan England so that we can understand the people as well as the events of the period.

19:150.75 hrPerforming Arts TentThe Debatable ChoirPennsic Performing Arts
The award-winning Debatable Choir returns, bigger and better than ever, to perform songs of love and laughter by such luminaries as Palestrina, Gastoldi, Nannino, Morley, and Josquin.

Dinner was Sloppy Joes.

The solar panel did not charge (enough to count) at all today. ☹

Monday 23:28

The charge controller is not providing enough voltage to drive the charger/power supply for the laptop. I don't know whether the Optima battery is too low (the controller says it's at 12.3v, with the output shutoff set at 10.7v) or the controller is broken. The controller hasn't measured any significant charging after the 1st day hooked up here. The laptop power supply is working, connected directly to the battery (bypassing the controller - and not recording any further power usage).
Maybe I should just unplug it from the battery and see whether that resets anything....

Monday 23:52

The total AmpHrs charged has not reset, so that 65AH I thought I got the first day is probably (cumulative) from last summer, and I've been getting only 1 or 2 AH/day this Pennsic. But the charge controller is driving the laptop power supply again, so something's been reset.

Tuesday 01:17

There was hot water in the shower tonight. ☺
I'm getting to bed much later than desired. ☹
Delayed-action earworm: the 3rd Kyrie from a mass played during Sunday's Mass Project class.
