Pennsic VLI - War-week Sunday
Sunday 07:19
Sunday 20:56
57 classes of interest; went to 7 (plus 2 rehearsals).
I didn't see Colleen this morning. I guess she had a late night out drumming?
I didn't get as much done before classes as I'd hoped to. I've been suspecting that the contacts on the plugs between the solar panel and the charge controller need cleaning, but I didn't get to check them this morning. I've just opened one of the plugs and filed the contacts; we'll see whether I can get more than 1 AmpHr of charging tomorrow.
Tonight was Caer Edgemere's Thanksgiving Dinner. Instead of roasting a whole turkey, this year Anna did a breast and separate legs. (We should have had more legs. Or thighs.) Most people had eaten before I got back from my last class, but we've got someone who was here for just the weekend and leaving tonight.
Good classes, as usual.
The HerbWife class was largely about how women were treated by the medical "profession/industry", and the relative absence of men in the delivery of babies. And the really nutso things people believed about conception, pregnancy, and birth. I left early to get to KWC rehearsal on time.
12:00 was slack in the schedule, but Tempus Peregrinator is always interesting (and he's a friend of
realinterrobang) and his class was next door to the one I wanted to take at 13:00. I left early for the leatherworking class.
Leatherworking was crowded, as expected, but it wasn't hands-on and didn't have any handouts, so there was little benefit to being there early. We're to send the instructor an email to get the class notes sent back to us. And it didn't fill its 2 hours, so I caught the end of the Sine Quadrant class and picked up its handout, with a replica of the device.
The Nunnery class was about the (lack of) options open to Venetian daughters coming of age. I left early for rehearsal, and probably missed some good bits - it was just getting to the nunnery part.
Chorulus Pennsicus is sounding good at just its 2nd rehearsal, and the things that need picking apart are satisfyingly challenging (as opposed to the things that are problems for lesser choruses). I think everyone was there today.
Medieval Harmonies for Bardic Purposes was kind of free form. I got there late, coming from rehearsal, with 1 other student there and 3 more coming even later. We were all accomplished musicians (3 in Chorulus this year and a 4th last year; those same 4 in KWC at some point; the 5th an outstanding instrumentalist; the 6th taught yesterday's Byzantine notation class), so the class was completely different from the same offering from the instructor earlier in the day (at Bog Univ). We had fun.
The Mass Project played some familiar music and some I didn't know. We had 4 people ((but no bass) plus the instructor), and probably could have sung something, but the class has taken a different direction; thoughts of performing this week are gone. Tomorrow's class has been cancelled.
Somehow I've had 3 days with no classes with Erin.
I bought a bag of ice before heading back to camp. My ice chest was still cool, but all the ice had melted.

08-0609:001.0 hrA&S 14Beyond the HerbWife: Fantasy, History & HerbalistsJadwiga ZajaczkowaOur modern concept of the role of herbs and herbalists in pre-1650 Europe is a mishmash of fact, fiction, misunderstanding and propaganda. We'll try to identify the most controversial ideas on herbs, women, witches and medical treatment, and give a more balanced, if less satisfying, picture of SCA-period herbalism.

Just what every Landsknecht needs, though it will help with any late-period pants. Might talk about the famous Janet Arnold Upsala/Sture Pluderhosen with the "bum" as well as other cool pant stuff.

If you like to sing in the SCA and attend a lot of bardic circles, you've probably wondered how people figure out complex-sounding harmony lines seemingly on-the-fly. Understanding some of the basic music theory behind harmony is helpful in learning to think harmonically, making your harmonies sound medieval, and perhaps more importantly, making them sound good. There will be some singing in class; feel free not to sing if you don't feel ready. You'll leave the class understanding more about what you hear around the bardic circle.
08-0618:001.0 hrPerforming Arts Rehearsal TentMass ProjectLady Erlandr NordenskaldHands-on look into the Mass as a musical form and its importance in Renaissance vocal music. We will study a plain chant Mass and a Mass by Josquin. We are going to do a mini-performance at the European Music Expo and a Mass Performance during War Week. Time and Date TBD
Sunday 22:43
I've been falling asleep in a chair. (I was dropping off in the leatherworking class too.) I have not gotten enough sleep the last few days.
There's singing coming from Clan Cambion, the camp to our west. (
anniemal hung out there a lot; not always sober.)
Sunday 23:50
The Pennsic blood drives have little favors every year. I've tied all my favors to a string around the crown(?) of my hat, like pilgrimage souveniers, for the Pilgrimage Project tomorrow.
Again tonight there's no hot water in the shower, and I don't feel like figuring out the problem. (We can't be out of propane again already - if that was the problem last time. Pilot light's out on the water heater?) I didn't really want to be up any later anyway; skipping the shower gets me to sleep earlier. (Today wasn't sweaty.) The weather still hasn't been very hot. It was only 80°F/27°C in my tent when I got back from classes. It's 66°F/19°C now in the tent; cooler outside.
