quietly look stupid, or open your mouth and prove it?

Some guy said "Nice tricycle" as I went by today. I didn't stop to engage him in conversation, but it just proved he knows nothing about recumbents in general or tricycles in particular. It was clearly meant to be an insult, since I wasn't on a tricycle to begin with. But nobody who has a clue about the many ways recumbents are superior to common bikes would try to insult the bike (or its rider) to begin with. (And what is it with people who feel compelled to (try to) insult total strangers?) Recumbents aren't superior in all ways, but they're a different tool, and they do a different job, and they do it very well. And nobody who's ever ridden a recumbent trike, an adult tricycle, would see it as an insult. Recumbent trikes are an amazing amount of fun to ride. They handle like racing cars. You can turn with tremendous side G-forces. They are simply a blast.

The guy didn't look like he had the physique to endure an hour on an upright bike.It was windy today. Strong (mostly) tailwinds on the way to work, and headwinds on the way home. 35°F/1.7°C, and wind chill.

GPS Sends Florida Driver Down W&OD Trail July 11, 2013 at 9:45 am
... the man claimed that a GPS navigation system on his phone directed him to use the trail. The Florida resident was issued a court summons for reckless driving and was escorted off the trail and back onto local roads, Watson told ARLnow.com.
While trying to catch up with the errant driver, police officers marveled at the fact that he didn't realize he was driving on a bike trail.

Capital Crescent Trail gated to prohibit cars Monday, June 24th 2013
There is some confusion about where the road stops and the Capital Crescent Trail begins. A barrier had to be put up between the street and the trail in Northwest Washington because drivers were confusing the trail for a road.
I used to spend a lot of time on the W&OD Trail. At a previous job we had our alternate data center just a block off the trail. The W&OD was also a good way to get to the monthly Reston contra dance. And it's a 45-mile trail, so out-and-back you can get a good ride of whatever length you'd like.

The Capital Crescent Trail is part of my preferred work commute now. I did see a stray car on it one night, but it wasn't speeding; I think the driver was desperate to find a place to turn around. The gate is sometimes open because there is a rowing club and boathouse on the park side of the gate. (There's other clubs downstream; all there most likely before railroad was gone.) And there was a night coming home (McLean) from Uno's (Bethesda) after a contra (Glen Echo) that a couple of police cars came down the CCT with flashers on and stopped me. They eventually concluded I wasn't the (Black?) person on a bicycle they were looking for. (They must have had fun backing out the trail, while the guy they were looking for got a lot farther away....)
