Today's bike commute was just a series of problems.
The carry strap broke off one of the panniers yesterday, so that was one more reason to finally switch to a new set. (They tend to fall off, a zipper's broken, they're not waterproof....) Moving everything from one set to the other took a little time. Getting the new ones mounted took quite a bit of time.
Everything got wet on the ride home last night. Most of the clothes I needed were still downstairs on a drying rack. My shoes were still damp, and my gloves still wet.
Today was quite a bit cooler than yesterday, so I needed to change what I was wearing and what I was planning to carry for the ride home. (Too cold for the wet gloves.)
The front-brake cable wasn't moving freely, and managed to get caught on the pedal when I was leaving. That meant returning and fixing the cable routing and getting some grease into the cable housings.
I was on the all-paved route today. Coming down the sidewalk along US-29 (i.e. the Custis Bike Trail) there was something under the leaves that blocked my front wheel from steering left. If you can't steer, you can't balance. I went down; scraped my knee.
Traffic was particularly bad around the White House. Maybe it's normal that time of day, but the north-side plaza was also blocked off, forcing bikes (and pedestrians) away from Lafayette Square.
