I often haven't felt like going anywhere and dealing with crowds on Independence Day. Our fireworks have been going up on the roof and seeing what we can see.
anniemal hasn't gone up the ladder for years. And every year the trees around us are bigger, and block more of the view.
I don't know why, but this year I was curious about the other views. Key Bridge is supposed to have a good view. Wide sidewalks, and easy pedestrian access. It would obviously be crowded. Arlington Memorial bridge, likewise. The Iwo Jima Memorial should have a great view; looking at a map it lines up with a view I stumbled across when I had to
take a detour coming home from work. I hadn't even noticed the Capitol in my frame when I took a photo of the Lincoln and Washington Memorials across the river.
Long Bridge Park is supposed to be good; I don't think I've ever been there. And the Air Force Memorial (9/11?) has a good view, but it's not someplace I know how to get to. (When I've gotten there by surprise, finding my way home has been a challenge.)
Seems like most of the other bridges should have good views too. The
Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge is one of my regular commute routes. There's one small parking lot close to it (and it turns out that lot was closed). Neither end is a convenient walk from a Metro station. So it would probably not be crowded, and it would be easy for me to get to. I picked a spot over the DC shoreline of the Potomac because the bridge sidewalk got wider there. The view turned out to be pretty good. I was glad that I always have earplugs handy. You could very much feel the percussive shots.
Drivers seem to think they can stop on the bridges to watch the fireworks. No. Just No. There's police around to move them along. Traffic was not allowed onto the bridge during the fireworks. (It was stopped briefly a couple of times before the fireworks started, too.) I don't know the reasons for that.
There were lots of people on the river in small boats (canoes, kayaks) on the Virginia side. (The view's probably not good on the DC side.)
The weather was comfortable, and not raining.
After the fireworks, the trail up the Potomac to the bridge into Rosslyn was very crowded. People from the Arlington Memorial Bridge?
