The first time he saw her, she spoke out to him… asked him if he was okay. He happened to be staring at the flowers… the ones he had forgotten the names of. He was pretty sure he should of known them, but their names, classes, nothing came to mind. He looked up at the girl. Fit stature, an overflowing chest, clear blue eyes, and auburn hair. To be honest, he thought the girl was beautiful. But having such thoughts wasn’t becoming of a lieutenant. He stood up straight and… sadly towered over her.

--

It was something about her that rendered him speechless. Maybe, it was because he didn’t have the pressure of his title here or the seriousness of a crew surrounding him. He was in school, but this one was more laid back than the academy. From time to time, he would catch himself staring at her. She was only one row away, two seats up. The teacher would call on him and the authoritative figure would go ignored. Thankfully, when he snapped out of it, he could answer the question flawlessly. Good thing he was at the top of his class back home.

--

“I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You were pretty banged up when I saw you last.”

Yes…! She approached him (because well, clearly he hadn’t) and started a conversation.

“I’m better now. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the infirmary.”

“No problem.”

She walked away and hell, he wanted to have the chance to talk to her again. There was no reason to chicken out. He piloted a starship with no problem and now he was breaking out in cold sweat to just talk to a girl.

“Kallen, wait!”

He chased after her and in moment, stood before her. She turned around to face him, tilting her head up.

“What is it, Sulu?”

“I uh-”

It was so strange to hear his voice stumble over his own words. He was always composed, calm; very different from what he was displaying. In her presence, Sulu didn’t know what it was. Kallen was a simple plain girl as far as he could see and there was something radiant about her that he simply could not ignore.

“Can we catch lunch together later?” To try and keep his professionalism, he decided not to add ‘or something’ to the end of his question. This was all too intense.

“Sure, I don’t mind.”

Mentally he wanted to jump for joy but he kept his appearance somewhat composed.

“Great. I’ll see you later then.”

--

Sulu sat across from an already seated Kallen. She had picked out a sandwich that looked interesting enough to eat and he had gotten a salad. Although, how she stared at her food caught his attention.

“Everything okay?” He had asked her in the same manner she did when they first met.

“Yeah just…”

Even the look she gave her food reminded of how he looked at the flowers when they crossed paths for the first time.

“It’s a sandwich; ham and cheese with lettuce and tomato.”

“I know that,” Kallen said calmly. But there was something about the look in her eyes. Before he could say anything else, she spoke again.

“I… know it’s one of my favorite foods but… I don’t remember how to eat it.”

The simple notion of eating a sandwich and her forgetting it was almost funny. Sulu held back a laugh before he looked at Kallen.

“It’s like when we first met. I couldn’t remember the names of the flowers I had been looking at.”

Kallen nodded absentmindedly. He touched their respective trays and switched them. Now a grilled chicken salad was placed in front of her instead of the unknown object called a sandwich.

“Here.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

She cast her eyes on Sulu and he happened to do the same. Both of them shared a small laugh before taking a bite of their new found lunches.

Hikaru thought to himself that it was easier to relax and be himself here. Of course, being a lieutenant was part of his existence, but he felt like could loosen up, not be so serious, be a man who could indulge himself more in the chances of life.

“Feels just like I’m falling for the first time.” The line slipped from his mouth mid-smile, content, and completely satisfied.
