To Protect and Serve to serve and protect
Sulu had finally come to realize that he had it a lot easier than Kallen.
A lot.
The look on her face when he drew the weapon from her chest was to be nothing compared to the pain he went through when their roles were reversed. Sage was thin and small compared to Guren MK-II. His foil didn’t even hold a candle to Kallen’s gun. And it wasn’t a small pistol or automatic. It was a fairly large machine gun. But every time Sulu summoned it from her chest, Kallen tried not to make a sound, but the pain clear as day on her face. Sometimes there would be a sharp intake of breath she would hold until the weapon was completely out of her. Other times, only her hard breathing to get past the pain would fill the silence. She’d grit her teeth and her eyes slammed shut every single time.
If the occasion every came up that Sulu wanted to complain about the pain, he wouldn’t. Not after he saw her face like that after the first time. Although he was impressed with her weapon; something like that residing in side of her. Sometimes the look he gave off was jealousy. Truth was he would have rather their weapons switch so she could go through less pain.

Kallen and Sulu happened to be the unbeatable team and to most, it was sickening. She wielded a puny weapon while he used something far greater. Most times, except for that one fluke (which never happened again), people avoided fighting Kallen. She was good… damn good with that foil. But when she finally allowed Sulu to claim ownership of her, he was the new target. There was no way that some guy who only knew of fencing could handle a gun.
What little did they know…
“Utopia is here,” Sulu declared trying his best to ignore the expression on her face. Seeing the younger one like that, it pulled at his heart more than it probably should. And the defeat came easy, quick even.
More battles won meant that a lot of evil eyes cast them as their target.

The teenager had been enjoying her after school break, walking around campus. The stroll was interrupted by an unwanted touch and a cloth over her mouth. Months out of training and she allowed this to happen. If this had been during the prime of the rise of the Black Knights or even before, this situation would have never occurred.
The headache was splitting and the chemical forced on her caused her to become lucid, but not pass out. Some of the male students, clearly jealous of their winning streak had kidnapped her. Great. Just great. Tied up too, just like old times.
“Is this what you do to make yourself feel better?” Kallen questioned, keeping up her strong front. “You can’t handle your loss so you try and come at us separately.”
“Your prince won’t be able to find you.”
A slap registered across her face, stinging like hell and it didn’t help the headache already pounding against her walls. Despite all the pain, she had to stay awake. Sulu would be able to find her if he did. He promised that he would protect her… even outside of their pact.
--
The problem? He couldn’t find her.
When Hikaru felt that resonating pain in the back of his head, he knew Kallen was in trouble. She was a big girl and could handle herself, he knew that. But sometimes, she acted too strong, never wanted to rely on others. That’s why it had taken so long for someone to even claim her as a weapon.
He ran, searched all over the campus. Progressively the pain was getting worse and he was running out of time. It wasn’t the fact that she had been taken away from him, but he felt… lost, lost without her. And knowing that she was gone just made him feel things he had never experienced. His mind remembered the physical pain that he had put Kallen through. She dealt with the pain when he drew the gun from her chest, but the headache? He had been through it once, damn near thought he was going to pass out, and not even that much time had passed. But here he was, half hour later, scanning every nook and cranny of the school grounds, and he could not find her. His headache was getting worse and clouding his vision. If he could barely hold up, he couldn’t imagine how Kallen was feeling.
To ease the pain for her, all he could say was, “I’m sorry.”
--
A change occurred and Kallen looked down at her chest. Her mark of ownership was… fading? Cerulean eyes opened wide and unexplained tears fell down her face. She was relived of the pain, but that wasn’t the point.
He went back on his word.
Sulu betrayed her.
Just like he had.
But in order to save her? Her mind didn’t let her get that far in the thought process. The next thing Kallen knew was that one of the males claimed ownership of her and proceeded to abuse her weapon; enough to damage and break her into obedience, but not enough to snap the weapon’s form.
--
The next time Sulu saw Kallen (there wasn’t even a police force to report a missing person), nothing could express into words how happy he was to see her again-
But she wasn’t herself.
Her usual bright blue eyes looked dim. As he went to approach her, he caught sight of the male. Deep down inside, something told Sulu that this was he the person he owed a world full of hurt to. She was following him, he owned her. Kallen carried the presence of a brainwashed and broken solider. And that was a look Sulu never wanted to see on her.
Meryl has been keeping close to Sulu since Kallen’s disappearance. But when she caught sight of the other girl she had bonded with, her heart dropped. All things considered, Meryl was standing by Sulu for a reason:
To find Kallen and have Sulu fight for her; to capture his lost ‘princess.’
The male student declared a battle and both respected players called forth their weapons. Although… usually the call wasn’t accompanied by a scream.
Sulu turned around quickly, Meryl’s gun in hand, to see the student rip Guren MK-II from Kallen’s chest. When she was his weapon, Hikaru had did everything in his power to be as gentle was possible drawing a weapon as large as hers from her chest. But this…asshole… didn’t care or give any reserve. Her weapon was damaged; unclean, not even cared for. Hell, it even looked as broken as she did. Which… would probably explain it.
He swore right then and there he would be sure not to have Kallen ever make that noise again.
Meryl was a little worried about this fight. Her weapon was a lot smaller than Kallen’s in size. Plus she was pretty confident that the other girl’s packed a bigger punch.
“You sure you can win this?”
“I just need you to stay with me. Trust me.”
And all he received was a nod after that.
It didn’t matter the model, type, or name of the gun, Sulu was trained. He knew even with his background and knowledge, he was going to have to be careful. He didn’t even want to look at the state of Kallen’s gun. He wouldn’t lie in saying his eyes scanned over her unmoving form.
Why didn’t he find her? Why did he give up?
It took a skilled game of hide and seek for Sulu to win. Appearing behind the male with the gun to his head, the student surrendered. He put down Kallen’s gun and raised his hands in the air. Hikaru didn’t even move the gun.
“You were the one that did this to her.”
It was a question said as a statement. The student knew now not to mess with either of them because they were both fucking scary. He nodded in response.
“And you were the one who took her from me.”
The kidnapping? Yes, that was him. He nodded again.
“Relinquish ownership. Now.” That authoritative tone sneaked back into his personality. He watched as the student’s body ran stiff and did as he was told. He heard Kallen fall to the ground shortly thereafter. When the male turned to apologize, Sulu clocked him a good one, just as Kallen did for him when his weapon was broken. What differed from Kallen’s situation was that while she gave him another punch for good luck, Sulu had given him ten. The male had no second thoughts in leaving after the assault and ran off.
Meryl approached Sulu and placed a hand on his arm.
“Go to her.”
“Thank you.”
Sulu took a moment to disown Meryl.
“Thank you so much for your help.”
She smiled and walked away, happy to help two of her allies… no… friends.
--
Just like when Sulu made the infirmary his second home, Kallen did too. Her stay was extended compared to his three days. She had to be held for a week. Unlike her leaving only to eat, he never left. There was a lot to say and he didn’t want to miss the chance where she would wake up and he was gone. He deserted her once. He didn’t want to do it again. Thankfully, Meryl visited often and brought the young adult food.
Sometimes, he watched the rise and fall of her chest to reassure him that she was still living, existing. When he ran to her side after the fight, Kallen looked as if she had stopped breathing. He had to press two fingers against her neck to make sure her pulse was there. And sure enough it was. He remembered he kissed her forehead, ran a hand through her hair, and apologized like crazy. And when his memories brought him back to that, all he could think about how he betrayed her… had gone back on his word.
When Kallen awoke, the intensity of the white room got to her. It was too vivid for her eyes to handle as they tried to focus.
“Kallen…”
She turned her head slightly in the direction she heard her name. With blurred vision she was able to make out it was Sulu. Him… the last person she wanted to see right now. What told him that was she turned her head to look opposite of where he was sitting.
Where was he supposed to begin? If he started with ‘I’m sorry’, Kallen wouldn’t believe him. (That’s why he had said it when his words couldn’t reach her.) If he called out her name again, he knew that she would ignore him. Just what could he do?
Sulu took her hand, which she was too weak to snatch away from him, and kissed it lightly, just like an old fairytale. That definitely got her attention and she turned her head to look at him again.
“I don’t know where to start and I know apologizing won’t make up for anything. But if you give me a chance to explain-”
“I’m listening.”
Her voice was soft, low. Even if she didn’t look at him to give off that she was ignoring him, she knew she wouldn’t be able to dismiss his words.
The male decided not to start off telling Kallen that he searched for her. She knew that much. But he brought up the most important topic.
“I did it to save you.”
Hikaru saw the hurt on the girl’s face after the last word left his mouth. He almost wanted to smack himself for 1: saying that, 2: even going through that action, 3: Lelouch had done the same thing, and 4:
He forgot that Kallen had shared that information with him.
“I didn’t know what to do. I could only think of the pain you had to be going through and I didn’t… I didn’t want you to go through all that because of me. You’ve done everything in your power to protect me. And I couldn’t… I couldn’t do the same for you. And for that, I’m sorry.”
“You did.”
“What?”
“You knew… that in letting me go… I would return. Hikaru, I’m… right here.”
The hand he held in his own reached up and touched the side of his face. His eyes opened wide at the small fact that Kallen finally called him by his first name.
“It wasn’t the wisest decision. But you did what had to be done. So thank you.”
Sulu smiled, even though it was the opposite of what he wanted to do right now.
Cry from happiness that she was so understanding, caring, and loving. But she could kick Sulu’s ass if she heard him say that last word.
“Here,” she took his hand and placed it on her chest. “Reclaim me as your own.”
Sulu would have done so on the battlefield a week ago, but there was the whole formal consent thing and… well yeah. He respected Kallen enough to wait for her to wake up.
“I swear to you, Kozuki Kallen, to love, protect, and serve you…”
Kallen blinked, not because of the mark of ownership reappeared on her chest, but at the change of words.
“I’m sure that’s not how the pact goes…”
“That’s my pact to you and I’m not changing it.”
Kallen gave him a reserved smile before he leaned down the kiss her.
I won’t let what happened to you before occur again. You have my word as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu, U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.
Right, she unlocked that memory for him as well as the opportunity to make more in the future.

Later on, he had asked when she was kidnapped where she had been taken to. She replied with, “Your room,” which was a strategic place to hide for it would be the last place for Hikaru would check. He cursed under his breath that he let someone get over on him like that.
